- Q: Hi i have been doing some research into mobile phones and i came across a few terms that really confused me, i understand that when you talk on the phone the data is converted from your voice into digital signals, the part i dont understand is where modulation such as PSK occurs and how TDMA and CDMA fits into all of this can someone tell me what the relation is between these things.thank you
- There are a few parts to a mobile phone system: most obviously you have the radio interface, some kind of two way radio link between the handset and the 'base station'. This transmitts and recieves digital data using quadrature phase shift keying (PSK). This is a kind of modulation very similar to FM, but is used with digital signals rather than analogue signals. So the digital data is used to phase shift modulate an RF carrier which is then transmitted, and picked up by the base station, which then demodulates the PSK signal to recover the digital data. This is all very well and good, but what do we do when we have many users? How can the base station distinguish between the signal from one hand set and another? This is where Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) come into play. TDMA (used in GSM systems) is a kind of time division multiplexing. Each user gets a certain 'time slot' in which they are allowed to transmit their PSK signal in. So each user takes a turn and sends a few bytes at a time. In GSM there are 8 time slots (I think, i cannot recall exactly) in each channel (frequency). The bit rate is low and special vocoders are used to get voice audio into a low bit rate. - T-mobile shouldn't charge to get your phone unlocked. There are generally specific criteria that need to be met on your account before they will, such as being finished your contract etc (unless you purchased your phone at full retail price - which will require proof of purchase). There are some programs you can purchase on OKorder/stores that range from $10-$50 to have your phone unlocked. My suggestion is to call t-mobile and find out their policy on unlocking their handsets. Legally, they cannot refuse you an unlock code if you are finished your contract etc.

- Hi! I am a new T-Mobile customer, as they recently acquired SunCom (my previous provider). If you are not purchasing the phone directly from T-Mobile, be certain that it is a T-Mobile phone because even though my phone is practically brand new at less than two months old, I can not use all of the features since T-Mobile took over. I do not need the newest/fanciest phones, but I can tell you that I absolutely love Nokia phones. I had/have a Nokia 6103 and I think it is great. The Nokia 6085 is what I have now-it is supposed to be a newer version of the 6103, and they are indeed very similar. T-Mobile has the 6103 but not the 6085, but they do have a Nokia 6086. I would recommend any of these phones. They have voice recorder, camera, video camera, bluetooth, etc. I have them customized in ways that I just can not do with my husband's phone (a Motorola). It might take some time to figure out how to customize it and what settings you want, but you truly can make it YOUR phone. I hope you find the perfect phone! Mine would be, if I could just get a couple features to workthey are supposed to be working out the kinks related to the merger.

- Sprint and Virgin mobile are both CDMA. neither one uses SIM cards unless its an international phone. The are basicly the same company with a diffrent name. virgin mobile is the pre paid sprint just like boost is the pre paid nextel. 4 names 1 company. any virgin mobile rep you speak to that tells you it can't be done is lying.

- Boost mobiles phones are not traceable but there is a software that you can download and subscribe on Boost Mobile network where you and your friends can know whether each person is located if you have to be a public place and want to meet with each other. Another thing is no one can trace your whereabouts without your consent and authorization. The only way for a company or law enforcement to know your whereabouts through a cell phone is for them to have a court madandated supeona to the cell phone company ordering them to located you through your cell phone by locating your position on the closest cell towers.
