- Smoke detectors have a life span and after that it should be replaced. They usually go about 5 years or some even 10 but when they start giving you trouble signals ( which is what the beeping is all about) its time to replace it. It is not a hard job but if you are not comfortable with a bit of wiring best to get someone who is to help you. Good Luck

- Good idea. But then you have to paint the designated hydrants blue. I doubt even a dog would pee on a blue target. And the re-training of firemen (ok, firepeople) would cost a fortune. Just think of all the training they have had to look for yellow hydrants.
