- I've been in the buisness for a long time, and no matter the paint, or even the number of colors, what your talking ab out is a faux finish. In the technique, you'd roll on a color, then apply even wax paper, saran warp, plastic drop cloth, usually wrinkled already, and gently remove it. The effect would show all the lines and creases in the finish. Work in small areas at a time,,,,no larger than 3 x 3 to maintain some control, and the patterns will be different everytime, b ut you should blend when you can, and keep the base coat wet long enough to accomplish the finish you want, whether is that, rag roll, sponge, feather, etc. There are hundreds of web sites, hundreds of books, and dozens of techniques. - Don't use plastic. It will crack over time. My first attempt years ago was with a swimming pool liner. The part not in the water cracked and spread below the waterline. I also suspect that the roofing cement will react with the plastic. Even if it didn't melt the plastic, one small tear in the top layer would be toxic to fish. Go with the rubber liner designed for fish ponds. The cheap way will cause you nothing but grief. Don't forget a pump and filter. Yahoo fish ponds or garden ponds. It will give you plenty of design ideas. If money is an issue, consider a blue childs wading pool.

Most adhesives that apply in liquid form will not work well, and almost all will have smell that remains for some time One adhesive that would work well both on plastic sheeting, have virtually no smell, and will remain solid under dirt is hot glue, but application is time-consuming, and you will have to be careful with the application temperature, as it has to stick onto the plastic, but not melt through it. A heavy-grade plastic sheet will be needed/ You have some choice in the melt points of the glue stick and can ask at the store about the lowest melt sticks they have. . The easiest solution to this might be a small craft-store glue gun and buy the sticks from them (or a dollar store) as they only use glue sticks that have a low melt point Before beginning your main work, practice applying the glue on a spare part of the sheeting and see how quickly you can work with it,
