Q: How do solar panels affect the overall energy security of a building?
Solar panels can greatly enhance the overall energy security of a building. By harnessing the sun's energy, solar panels provide a reliable and sustainable source of electricity. This reduces a building's dependence on traditional energy sources, such as fossil fuels, which are finite and subject to price volatility or supply disruptions. Solar panels also contribute to grid resilience, as they can continue generating power even during power outages. Consequently, incorporating solar panels into a building's energy mix can enhance its energy security by diversifying its energy sources and promoting self-sufficiency.
Q: How can I start working as a solar panel installer/technician without years of education?
The best suggestion I can give is to call solar installation companies in your area, and ask for their recommendation as to what to do. They may recommend a technical college with an appropriate program. With unemployment rising, new jobs in solar will likely be scarce for a while. You might also inquire at roofing companies. If you apply at a solar company, and can demonstrate that you already have roofing experience, that will be a plus.
Q: I have seen DIY software which explains everything for novices. Specifically, how to build your own solar panels and tie them into your home electrical system for about $00 in parts.Has anyone tried doing this? Was it easy?
Your location could effect this answer significantly. If you are in an area that requires considerable amounts of heating, and you are looking to save some money with a homemade project, try solar-thermal.S-T is easy and cheap ,can be built from common scrapyard materials, and will give you a great knowledge gateway . The orientation and tracking skills you will learn can be used later with PVs if you choose,or you can make better concentrators for the solar-thermal and build yourself a sterling or rankin cycle engine to generate electricity. If u need heat,or even hot water, u can start saving the money u put into the system immediately. Concentrated PV is here and now ,but, in a year or 2 it will be cheap and readily available and thats when PV will start to approach the efficiency of solar-thermal.there a great sites and groups on just S-T out there ,join 'em,check 'em out, read the free info from those who have built working systems, and you will probably find a more useful method of saving money and the planet at the same time.Just remember to approach it as a hobby/learning experience at first.Start with solar-thermal....theres a reason the anti-greenies point at the ROIs on PVs,great arguement against alt energy, but over the last 30 years I've shut up quite a few skeptics with my solar-thermal projects ,esp. when coupled with geothermal...have fun, make a local scrapyard owner/worker ur freind..................GEOD
Q: my dad met a guy representive for a solar panel company at a swapmeet Scam?
Hard to say. Solar panels are becoming more common these days. May want to ask if the vendor is licensed and bonded contractor (if he's doing installation as well as panel sales). Find out the name of the equipment that this guy is selling (panels and other hardware) and do a search. For that matter, get the guys name and do a search on it to see he pops up elsewhere.
Q: hi so im doing a school project thing and they have a lot of different questions for us that help us decide whether we would rather a city have a nuclear reactor, or solar panel. But i cant seem to get the last 2 questions...help please???so question ........What types of emissions, if any, are produced by each type of generating station? Do these emissions affect human health?question 2.....What are the long term financial costs associated with maintaining each type of generating station?thanks!
There's no standard nuclear reactor, but if we take a GW nuclear plant, it can generate about 8 terawatt-hours/year. A 200 watt solar panel can generate about kilowatt- hour/day, or 365 kwh/year, so that's about 2 million 200 watt solar panels. However, the power output from the nuclear plant is controllable by the operators, where solar panels only operate at full output for a few hours/day (on clear days - less if there's cloud). Therefore, to compare the two, you have to factor in some kind of energy storage or backup which will increase the cost of the solar installation (perhaps by a factor of two or more). Despite claims of solar being cheaper than coal now, when one compares apples to apples (i. e. total energy produced, and controllability) solar is still several times more expensive than coal, and about twice as expensive as nuclear even in the U. S. A gram of U-235 can make usable energy equal to three metric tons of coal. Solar energy production has no hazardous by-products, but manufacture of the panels can involve some very hazardous materials like fluorine (for silicon panels) or cadmium (for CdTe panels). This is part of the reason panel manufacture has gone to Asia - they have fewer environmental regulations and it's easier to dispose of the byproducts of production. DK
Q: How long does it take a 5 watt, 2 volt solar panel to charge a 2 volt R.V. battery?
Most solar panels have something called a charge controller on them. This prevents electricity from going backwards from the battery to the panel. Solar panels are rated at 2V but they do put out a little more than that during full sun operation. You didn't specify the size of your battery but it really doesn't matter. It comes down to your consumption of power. If you are only charging the RV battery so it maintains a charge when you don't use it very much, a 5 watt panel is fine. It will charge the battery and keep the small drains on the battery from making it go dead ( the clock radio, the theft deterrent system, etc use power even when RV is off) But if you are using the battery to run things when you are parked, you probably don't have a big enough panel. If you use a 30watt fluorescent light and a 00 watt laptop, you need 30 watts of power saved up every hour in your battery and that's with no inefficiencies. So if your panel puts out 5 watts an hour and you are using 30 watts an hour, you need 30 watts/ 5 watts = 9 hours minimum of charge time to run your stuff for just one hour. You probably need a panel of around a 00 watts to get any meaningful use of your battery. Plus, you never want to run your battery to full drain because it ruins the plates inside the battery. Watts = volts x amps. If you have 2 volts panels, you would charge at 8 amps with a 00 watt panel. This is a good charge rate. Any more than this and you risk warping the plates with too much heat.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on streetlights?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on streetlights. They provide a sustainable and cost-effective solution by harnessing the sun's energy to power streetlights, reducing the dependence on traditional electricity sources and lowering overall energy costs. Additionally, this renewable energy option helps to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental sustainability.
Q: I am doing a project for school and i need to power a 9v DC motor using a solar panel. Does anyone know places i could get these for not to expensive, and how many volts/watts i would need?

Q: I have a 2V .5W solar panel and I want to get a battery that can be charged by the solar panel that can then be used to power a 2V .5W fan. Ideally I want all the components to be connected and able to run without interaction. I have very little knowledge in regards to this field which is why I have come to yahoo answers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Q: How much per sq inch do they cost? Will i have to worry about them blowing off during hurricane season? If the sun isnt out for a week will my power go out? Will I have to check them every week and check which ones arent working and replace them? Is there anyway for them to be damaged by acid rain or any type of erosion like hail? When do I have to replace them? How do I dispose of old ones (like recycling)? What is smarter and more economical having few big panels or many small ones? I know I have alot of questions but I want a good detailed answer.
The cost of solar is measured in dollars per watt. That means the cost of a cell that can make one watt continuously in full sunlight. A friend of mine is starting a new job to set up a new solar cell factory and he said the present cost is $3 per watt, but that they expect to get that down to $ per watt in a few years. They can be damaged by weather, just like any regular roof. My insurance agent asked if I had solar panels, so it is a factor in insurance cost. I never heard of recycling or disposing of old panels, maybe because they are so new and last so long that not many are ready to be disposed of yet.
