Q: Is the hydraulic pipe joint stainless steel or carbon steel?: The strength of carbon steel is higher than that of ordinary stainless steel.If it's only for hydraulic lines, it's better for carbon steel, whether it's cost or pressure resistance.

The best way to get rid of the old galvy is to cut it with a sawsall, as it makes short work of it and the pipe is probably so rusted you'll not want to try to undo it with a pipe wrence but, if you do expect it to break. Any Suggest?: It's not. The ports are all marked on filters these days. Inlet means in to filter from pump. Waste is backwash (if a sand filter). Outlet goes to heater, chlorinator and then pool return stub out. The front of the pump is where your suction (from pool stub out) goes. Top of pump goes to filter. Just make sure you have all the plumbing fittings and pipe handy. A roll of teflon tape as well. If this is all poly plumbing you'll need a propane torch to heat the pipe at the fittings and gear clamps.

Plumber's language usually refers to the hole in the pipe, or inside diameter, so when we mere mortals measure things, we get waylaid on the outside diameter (OD) and get confused. Any hardware store or building center will have a bin full of 1 1/2 SCH 40 PVC tees - just stay away from the lightweight under-the-sink stuff - which fits 1 1/2 OD pipes So it goes. 75% of the 1/2 brass compression fittings I sell get returned, because nominal 1/2 copper pipe is actually 5/8 OD. etc. By the way, for structural/non-plumbing PVC use, there are specialized fittings that are useful, like couplings without a shoulder inside, so they can slide along the pipe, angled tees with a fourth socket on the side (like for the top end of a tent), or even five or six-socket fittings for hubs, etc. Harder to find, but cool.
