- Q: For example, we know that air is a better insulator then styrofoamBut why?
- Thermal insulation depends upon the material, its thickness, and its densityStyrofoam will conduct heat better because its atoms and molecules are closer together, and that means they can pass heat through easier.
- Q: OK, never done this, I'm trying to cut down on our huuge heating billThis house we're in is older, and not built very wellSo, were' trying to insulate as much as possibleThe attic has insulation but it's really old, and the inspector said it was rated to some number that wasn't nearly enoughSo when I get new insulation, should I get the fiberglass rolls, then just roll it right over top of the old stuff? OR, should I rip the old stuff out??And whats the best way to insulate the walls? Can I do this by shooting some of that loose stuff down the walls from the attic? Thanks, I'm totally clueless.
- Heat rises, so your first improvement is to insulate the attic Unless your existing attic insulation is wet or significantly compacted (then you should remove it), just lay new fiberglass over the existing layer - you will increase the total R value of your insulation For example, if you have 6 of FG in the attic (R value 16), adding another 8 of FG (R value 30) will nearly triple the total insulating valueRun the new rolls at right angles to the existing layer of insulation to close off any spots that might leak Be sure that you do not insulate over recessed ceiling light 'cans' - unless you know for sure that they are designed for zero clearance to insulationTypical cans need space for air to circulateContact your electric utility for an energy auditThey can suggest low-cost ideas to cut your heat losses, and they can analyze your home for the most cost-effective insulating projects - double-paned low-e windows, blown-in wall insulation, replacing a low-efficiency furnace, caulking, weatherstripping, etcAnd they might offer rebates and/or low interest loansGood luck.

- Q: We raised the roof on our home several years agoWe didnt remove the original roof to save moneyMy mothers bedroom quarters are the farthest from the Central Air condenser outsideUpstairs in all our rooms, but especially hers get sooo hotShe has the thermostat in room for the upstairsIts set at 75 degrees but it is always about 80 degrees in her roomI know its summer out but I would think the AC unit would be able to keep up since its running continuoslyThere is no ice formation The AC is set to 80 downstairs with the kids running in and out all dayCould the 1st roof be retaining th heat? Should be install fans at either end of the house? We were told it would cause an updraft and we would loose the cool air we are gettingHELPP!!!!
- I have rigid styrofoam insulation on the walls in my basement, and I don't see any reason why you couldn't put it between the floor joists, but it would mean a lot of cuttingIt may be possible to use that new product that you can spray on - when it sets it is almost like styrofoamIt expands when you spray it onThat would be my first choice now with anything like thatI don't know how it compares in terms of cost and I don't know the correct name for itI've seen it quite a lot on those Flip this House sort of shows.
- Q: Thinking about building my own studioWe play acoustic 95% of the timeWhat are the best materials (wood, insulation, ect.) to use to build a studioWhat is the best way to make the playing/singing booth? If you have any suggestions, let me knowThanks

Thanks!
- For starters, yo.um, er.get yourself some Frosted Mini Wheats and eat two bowls every morning, GFor snacks, you could fashizzle some apple-izzles which are high in fiber.

- ferrets will dig at their bed, if you keep their nails trimmed then their should be no problem in stuff getting caught in themI hav never heard of a ferret getting string stuck in their teethThey would probably like thatI use blankets for my ferrets and put them in a basket, they enjoy sleeping under the blankets if it gets to cold or on them if it is warmYou can use dog toys, cat toys, or baby toys for themMy ferret Raymond LOVES anything with a bell in itThey love smelly socks AND shoesIf you have any shoes or socks you'd be willing to give up then you can give it to them, don't bother washing themLarge stuffed animals also work for 'beds' and toysGood luck with your ferrets!!

- Recycling IS required in some states and citiesIn these cities, the sanitation workers (garbagemen) will not pick up your trash if it has recyclables in itThese cities and states have curbside recyclingFor a few extra dollars a month, residents place recyclables into different curbside containers for pickupThis is the most convenient way to recycleIf you want convenient curbside recycling, contact your city council, mayor, elected official, etc., that is responsible for the government of your cityEncourage others to do this alsoIf your elected officials know you want curbside recycling, they will do their best to start itMy husband and I started a recycling center in the town where we liveIt took about 9 months of e-mails, letters, petitions, and attending city council meetingsWe're hoping to get curbside recycling voted on in another year or soAs another poster mentioned, it's more convenient to just throw your trash beside the road and keep drivingThat's why there's so much garbage everywhereI spent every Saturday, free of charge, at the city recycling center helping the citizens of my city recycle their paper, plastic, aluminum, tin, steel, cardboard, and paperAs Kermit The Frog says, It isn't easy being green.
