- Q:I have to create a crane to support a dead load for my Engineering Technology class. It can be made out of only 1/8 inch balsa wood and wood glue, and is going to be graded by the ration of weight held to structure weight.Could anybody give me some suggestions as to how to go about designing this thing? I already know most of the basics, but if anybody could give me some specific tips, they would be greatly appreciated.Thanks!
- Not enough information because a crane can be many shapes and have various forms of anchoring or counterbalancing the load. If you are not allowed to anchor to a base and can't use weight to counter the load (if all balsa) then you have to create legs and lift the load between them - Basically the design will need to be triangles in truss to take the compression and prevent twisting and a long upper piece in tension to act like the cable you don't have. I would make two legs that are each 3 sided trusses that meet at the top and have a single rod across the bottom to keep them from spreading. Then I would make a longish beam with flat triangles for stiffness and use a few uprights to position the tension rod. Hang the weight on one end and push down on the other so it pivots on the short legs.

- Q:What are the common problems encountered in hiring cranes for house constructions?
- Access, I assume you need a Franna. Possibly for frames and or trusses to the second level or steel beams. You will be limited by reach if the crane can only access the front of the house. In which case you may need a slew crane 30t or larger. Know the weights of what has to be lifted and the distance from the crane to where it will be placed. A crane cannot set up or travel over underground services or recently filled excavation. These things could mean the crane has to set up even further away from the house. If the crane is for unloading trucks, access again. Cranes need to stay about 3meters from power lines which is a common problem bringing gear onto site. While a slew crane generally sets up in one position for all lifts (some can travel) a Franna is designed specifically for pick and carry. It can unload trucks and travel the gear onto site under the power lines. Provided it isn't lifting extra large items. Speak with the provider about what has to be done, it will be all to familiar for any decent company. As long as access is fine and underground services won't hinder you they should know exactly what you need. Be prepared, usually a minimum 4hr hire. If you think the task is going to take longer you need to plan what has to be done and have everything ready for placement. Organization is paramount, you don't want a crane and it's crew sitting there doing nothing because you didn't plan ahead. - Q:i have a 83 camaro crane cam 305 v 8 4brrl edelbrock carb and i just changed the carb from a quadrajet to the edelbrock....but i cant seam to get it running right as long as im out on the highway it runs great but when i stop at a stop light i have to rev it up to keep it running..i changed the plugs plug wires and the distributor but i heard you have to have a different kind of distributor to change from the quareajet ( will all of the plug in and stuff to a regular edelbrock carb..is this true??
- If you can get vacuum from the intake manifold to the distributor advance, there is no reason to change distributors. You may need to re-jet the idle. Also if the cam is too steep and/or the carburetor is too big, the engine will flood. Check with Crane on timing changes and idle settings. The idle may need to be set up a little.
