Q:I have acquired a large number of pots that were recently (3 weeks ago) planted with everything ranging from petunias to hostas. Alot are dying. They were just planted in topsoil. I have been giving them miracle grow weekly, but does not seem to help. Should I unpot, and mix in some manure or garden soil and then replant. I do not have beds for them yet, so for now they have to go back in pots. Is it worth the stress of repotting them to give them better soil? Yes, all the pots have drain holes and have been getting watered daily, and get some sun, but not all day.
It probably is not worth it. Not knowing all the varities, makes it hard to comment. But petunias and any other flowers, not worth the bother. The Hosta is a tropical plant, and should be planted in half plain potting mix(no fertiliser),and half light river sand. They should never bre planted just in topsoil. Dirt from garden beds contains all manner of viruses and tiny nematodes, or grubs. The Hosta is a sulker. It may recover, but will sulk for ages. The other wrong thing is you don't water daily. Your killing them with kindness. Only water when top of pot is dry.And remember size of plant. Water in the summer twice weekly, or when dry, and in winter, once or twice a fortnight. Then again Hosta likes sun, but some may not. Also do not fertilise until they need it. Plants recovering are more likely to die from over-feeding and over-watering. Good Luck!
Q:My Bearded Dragon is about to lay eggs ( I assume as she is digging; they are unfertilized eggs and this would probably be her second time around ) and I don't have access to vermiculite, unless I buy it online which could last up to a week. Are there any substitutes I could use?Regular potting soil for example, or playground sand? (just some random examples that came off the top of my head, anything else would be VERY HIGHLY APPRECIATED) Thanks!
You need to go out and buy a cheap bag of top soil for $3.00 or so. Mix it in with what you already have mixed up. Peat will eventually break down over a couple of years, so there is no long term consequence with adding too much. Peat will hold the moisture quite well, which means you might not have to water as often. Your mixture is not as bad as you think it its, it can be saved.
Q:id like to know what your soil recipie is. im looking for something that breathes very well (temperature is a big problem of mine right now) contains worm castings and humus. and whats your main source for nitrogen?
complex point. check out into yahoo and bing. just that could actually help!
Q:i am getting leopard geckos if they have eggs do i need an incubator or is it fine to use the heat lamp? please answer! thanks
I personally just put mine in a small Tupperware container with a closed lid, no holes or anything and fill it about halfway with vermiculite or perlite (both can be found at reptile stores or garden stores, even like target or lowes) but if you cant get that, use moss. And mist it to where the humidity is about 60%, which is just damp, not soggy. Set the container on a heating pad and adjust the temp by putting more or less pieces of paper between the Tuppperware and the heating pad. Till its 80-89 deg. The hotter side will typically produce male, lower end producing mainly female. Only open the container every week or so to circulate the air, to keep in the moisture. Make sure before you put the eggs in, mark the tops with a pencil, pen or marker so you will know which side of the egg always needs to be facing up, if you flip it or it rolls or anything, the embryo will drown. If you have any more questions feel free to ask, and if you can manipulate a heat lamp to keep it at those temps, that works too. Just make sure the eggs are in an enclosed container.
Q:what is the formula for preparing new veg. garden in raised beds?
Go to your local feed and seed store buy a bag of promix and it will be enough potting soil for the year.perfect amount for gardens.best soil you can buy and is inexpensive and less hassle then making your own.
Q:Bought a female bearded dragon a month and half ago from an aquarium place, no one informed us she was expecting, came home and there is a bunch of eggs in her tank, don‘t know when she had them but apparently some time today, don‘t have and incubator or anything like vermiculite, or sand to use wondering what else i could use and if the eggs are okay and if not what can i do about them as every site says not to throw eggs in the garbage not that I want i‘m just not familiar with the hatching process.
if you didn't know the eggs are probably infertile.
Q:I just got a Baby Leopard Gecko, and the pet store said the first time i spray him (with conditioned water) he might hiss. That was a surprise to me because. i didn‘t know you had to spray them. How much should you and when? Also I have a humidity thermometer thing in there that says (Desert) (Moderate) and (Rain forest) and goes from 0 to 100.What should the humidity be at?
Moist Boxes In order to help your gecko shed properly, it's important to make a moist box available at all times. Overly low levels of humidity can cause the skin to stick to the body instead of being properly removed. If this happens, you will have to help your gecko shed. Fortunately, moist boxes are simple to create. Just fill a hide box with vermiculite, coconut fiber or moss, and moisten it slightly. The dampness of the box's contents will aid in complete shedding and will keep your leopard gecko a lot healthier. An improper shed is dangerous, since skin can remain on the toes and around the eyes, cutting off circulation as it ages. This is one of the most common ways that leopard geckos lose toes. The good news is that if you see toe caps remaining on your gecko, you can mist or soak it to help with removal. Just make sure to be gentle. It's also a good idea to make sure that your gecko's water dish is shallow, but wide enough for it to fit in completely, in case it would prefer to soak. Mist your moist box from time to time in order to keep it damp enough to be effective. It should be damp, but not soaking. Although leopard geckos naturally live in a dry climate, they need moisture to shed old skin, and their natural burrows are quite damp. Mist young geckos routinely, especially if it looks like they're close to shedding. Once or twice a week will work well to help them do it completely in most cases.
Q:i spent all spring and summer travelling this year so my garden is feeling rather neglected and lonely. there are some veggies i know can stand cold temps and still make it. i live in north central texas so freezing temps wont be an issue for a few weeks yet. is there any time to get something in the ground? like what?
Not really. It takes at least a month for radishes, which is about the fastest crop. Just start working the soil by adding organic compounds, and if needed vermiculite, etc.
Q:What is the bulk density of asphalt vermiculite? Is it better to use asphalt, vermiculite or cement vermiculite when roofing?
Cement vermiculite, that is, cement and vermiculite mixed together, construction needs water at the scene, solidification formed after a light insulation material, usually used for roofing or ground insulation. The bulk density of cement vermiculite is about 600-800KG/m3.If only from the bulk density angle, the asphalt vermiculite certainly is better than the cement vermiculite
Q:I know I need jars, spores, pressure cooker, a terranium, but what else do I need? Should I use Rye Seed or...?
No, you cannot it is not a safe substrate to use. If you are looking for a more soil in nature type substrate try buying Eco Earth that is a 100% pure cocofiber substrate. Please visit CrabbyWiki for further information regarding substrates.
