- Q: I have two leopard geckos that are housed together. One male and one female. Today as I was cleaning out their cage I found a dried out, hard, dead egg. I‘m not sure how long it had been there for sure but probably within the last week or two. I looked around and found no more. So now I‘m curious if my female gecko will continue to lay eggs, she‘s not looking to large, just normal. And if she is how to prepare for them so they don‘t also die. Any information is appreciated!
- if its the first time you saw eggs in the hidebox or in the cage it might lay eggs again 2-4weeks. you will see a sign if it is going to lay eggs. you will see the substrate in the hidebox will be scattered outside the hide and you will see inside that there is an empty space ready for laying. now if you see scattered substrate outside then you saw nothing empty space BUT you saw a mountain like shape inside then your leo finished laying and you can dig it ( very gently ) to see the eggs. prepare for a plastic container containing vermiculite. soak the vermiculite then squeeze it until a drop of water falls. then put it in the plastic container then put the eggs half way through the vermiculite. ( when you pick the eggs from the hidebox dont turn it up side down. just pick it up and put it in the plastic container with the vermiculite.
- Q: i heard that the water trays (pans) doesn‘t hold enough water to support the correct humidity at hatch time is this true and if so what do I need to put in their to raise the humidity? and please be specific and thank you!
- Since we hatch snake eggs, we use a mixture of vermiculite and perlite. Just make sure you use equal amounts of both soils. Perlite is an amorphous volcanic glass that has a relatively high water content.Vermiculite is a natural mineral that expands with the application of heat. Both can be found at your local WalMart or anywhere there is potting soil. If you mix them together in a tub or small tote, you mist the substrate with water. This can be done with a spray bottle of water. The temperature of the water doesn't matter. Just do NOT soak the substrate and do NOT get the eggs soaked or they will mold! This mixture of substrates is wonderful for holding humidity! This brings our humidity up to 100%
- Q: i have a project where i have to solve a murder. and the body was found in an upside-down barrel with a heaping amount of industrial grade moisture absorbing grain that may have been vermiculite?the victim died of blunt force head trauma.. so why do you think they would put the body into the two barrels?PLEASE HELP ME OUT??
- Get a dusk mask on and roll out some fiberglass batting over the top of it to keep it from moving around and getting in the air. If you're over 40, don't worry about it- you might get lung cancer when you're 90 if you breathe the stuff in every day, but by that time who cares?
- Q: Okay, so, I got a female crested gecko.....apparently, she was gravid! Now, I discovered 2 eggs in her cage.....what do I do?!?!?! I REALLY want the eggs to live, how do I incubate them so they can hatch? And, what do I need for substrate for the eggs? Do I need vermiculite? If so, how much? And do I need peat moss? PLEASE help!! And thank you!!!
- Just let him do his thing, instincts tell him what to do. However, if you don't have a humid hide, add one to his tank to make shedding easier. You make one by taking a plastic container and cutting a hole for an entrance. Then add damp paper towels. Change the paper towels every 2 days or so.
- Q: What mineral species are less dense than water? One is evenkite, what is the other one?
- Ice. Yes, ice is a mineral.
- Q: im wondering what the ingredients to vermiculite plant and soil fertalizer are, and if they are bad for a horse. my arabian pony has the run of the yard and as we have a nursery, we have all fertalizers..a bag of vermiculite was where he could get it. he likes to open ihs food bags with his mouth and probably thought that it was his food, so he chewed through the bag and ate all the vermiculite he could eat. what do i do?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
- i like perlite
- Q: she laid them last night i found them, put them in a piece of foam wet the faom laid it next to the heating lamp and put a a heatmat under it. they had little dents in them when i found them but they still have veins and a red color on the inside when candle lite it . other questions : will she lay more and if so how many for how long?, and will she be okay because she has alot of sentimental value to me, and ive had her sense she was little 3 years ago (i was just kind of worried). other comments : she is currently in a 80 gallon cage with my other male leopard gecko.
- Hey the dents are most likely lack of moisture. I would not recommend using wet foam. If you can get your hands on some vermiculite or perlite ( both can be bought for very little ) also if you incubate at the lower end of the scale you will get females and will take longer to hatch usually and ont the higher end will produce mostly male. For the vermiculite i used a 1:1 water to vermic and had no problems. If you put it in a tub with lid you will not need to add any more water only opening it once a week for some fresh air. I hatched out eggs this year doing it this way. For the perlite i think its generally a 1:8 of perlite to water. I have never used this so i will add a link. And I found with may female that she does not follow the standard clutch of eggs every 2-3 weeks as most sites say despite her being fed more and having more than enough calcium and vits. my girl only seems to lay every 5 weeks or so. I worried about my girl too as she came to me gravid and a bit on the small side for breeding but she has been fine. So long as she is a good weight and otherwise healthy given the right diet and plenty of calcium she should be fine. Hope this helped. I have added the link for perlite mix and general breeding info in the sources
- Q: Is perlite ok for leopard gecko eggs? Because there are no stores that carry vermiculite.
- vermiculite helps restore nutrients that it needs to perk up ...you can buy it at home depot :)
- Q: Is there something that can be mixed into topsoil to make it drain well in flower pots?
- Hi Victoria, You can increase the drainage capacity of any soil mix by increasing its porosity. To do that you can mix any relatively large grained material throughout the soil. Perlite is one of the favored porous materials because it doesn't break down or collapse easily, as Vermiculite does. Ground bark chips, sand, fine gravel and coir (coconut husk) are also used to add porosity. The key here is to mix this material throughout the potting soil. The out-dated notion of adding drainage material to the bottom of the pot has been discredited. In fact, all that does is to shorten the rootball, which decreases the porosity and drainage of the soil. It would also add that taller pots, drain better than squaty pots.
