Q:the tiles are laid down using thinset cement. Mastic not used.
If the tiles were properly laid with thinset cement, you're out of luck. You'll end up breaking almost every tile in the process. Sorry to give you the bad news.
Q:I am installing 4x4 ceramic tiles on a shower wall. I have been using a 1/4 x 1/4 sq. notch trowel, but am having trouble with the tiles staying put...should I use a 3/16 x 5/32 v-notch trowel instead?
Sorry guys wrong. You need to use a 1/4 x 1/4 square notched trowel. You will not get enough coverage on a v notch trowel. Those trowels are for a mastic( non wet area) and mosaic tiles..
Q:Ok we are remodeling our kitchen and have the area between the counter tops and the bottom of the upper cabinets that is currently some ugly green tiles. Very small ones at that. We do not want the hassle to remove these and try to replace with something more attractive. We are looking for solutions to just cover the tiles with something d-i-y and not too expensive. I have seen a lot of peel and stick stuff but don't know if it can be used on tiles. Please give suggestions!

Q:I‘m thinking about having a bathroom tiled. The bathroom is about 6 by 8 and right now the walls have a horrible pink and black alternating ceramic tile that goes up about 4 feet on the wall all the way around. All I want to do is replace this tile with a glass tile. I have no idea what the cost would be for materials and labor so any estimates would be appreciated. This is the only work I need done.
If you live near a Floor Decor Store, you should be able to find a decent glass tile for around $2.00/ square foot. Now, assuming it is on all four walls covering every bit of those walls, 4 ft. high, that would be about 112 square feet. Plus, you always need to buy around 15% waste. So, total you would need to buy 129 square ft. of tile. You also would need Mastic to put the tile on the wall, should cost you $50 or less for enough to tile the area you have. Labor should run you about $500-700 for the removal of the old tile and installation of the new tile. There is however one issue you might not have thought of. If you remove the old tile, it will most likely destroy the walls it is attached to. From the way it sounds, this is old tile that was installed using something called a mud bed. This is basically metal wire and weakened concrete. All of this will have to be removed and new sheet-rock or green board will have to be installed. The cost of this would run you another $600-800 in labor and materials. So your worst case scenario, would run you around $1800. If you happen to be in the Atlanta, I would be happy to take a look at the job. I have 10+ yrs. experience as Home Depot Certified Flooring Installer
Q:Hello! I currently have a 3 season sunroom addition on the back of my home that has been stripped down to the wood. I recently saw a 4 season sunroom that had tile down and needless to say, I fell in love with it! I am thinking about putting tile down in there but am worried about the weather...I live in Minnesota where it gets very cold...and that room is not heated in the winter. Would I have problems with the tile cracking? Or does anyone know of an alternative way to get a tile-looking floor without having to worry the temperature changes??
Hi, In the UK we have a floor covering which is similar to the wood effect laminate floor, it locks together and looks amazingly like 9x9 tiles. I put it in my bathroom and it is not as cold as tiles to the bare feet. It is a wood/paper based product but is waterproof for the normal house hold duty. I assume that the Minnesota winter will not make it too cold. Use a styrefoam underlay 2mm thick to prevent heat loss. this is a do it yourself job if you are handy with a saw, We know it as TILE LOK
Q:would it be to hard for me to do by myself and is there an adhesive that I put under the tile?
Carpet tiles are easy to install. Some even come with their own adhesive backing. You will need to begin with marking out the center of the room and squaring it to make a + so you can set the firs four tiles down and work outward from the center. Once you have marked your + do a dry run and make sure you don't end up with a large chunk of tile on one wall and a sliver on the other. If that happens, shift the center mark toward the shorter edge. Once you have done the dry run and you are happy with the results you can stick them down. Good luck
Q:ok, i tiled my kitchen with the sticky tiles (not expensive ceramic ones or anything like that) then sealed it with a clear tube of sealant. it is about 3 or 4 days later, and the floor looks like crap. the sealer left behind a nasty tar trail or something. While the tile looks glossy and beautiful the places i sealed are dull and def noticable. How do I get rid of the excess???? I've tried scraping, it just don't work. help me!!!!
first off, not all ceramic tiles are expensive :) second, rubbing alcohol and a little elbow grease ought to get off the excess sealant. if that doesn't work, try nail polish remover, wd-40, goof off, or mineral spirits. use cotton balls, or white paper towels/t-shirts/washcloths, etc. in the future, the stick-on tiles don't need a special sealant. just stick and it's done. good luck!
Q:tiles...for construction or what?
yeah they are really just for construction really
Q:is tiled floor the best flooring for people with pets?
I have to agree with Warren. Tile is fine for pets, but cold if not heated. Allure TrafficMaster vinyl planking is a heavy floating floor that is tough too. I would not say tile is the best...depends on the tile type (some are quite slippery and will show scratches). Trimming pet nails will help, but when cats and/or dogs want to tear and play or chase, they will scratch flooring as they cannot get the traction they require. Be realistic. My animals all have their nails trimmed regularly and have lots of scratches and marks in my floors from them..it is just part of living in a home with pets.
Q:I am tiling my kitchen countertop and want to put in some wood trim pieces around the front edge like is in newer homes with tile countertops. What I want to know is, where in Lowe‘s can I get that? Is it going to be with all of the moulding, etc., and am I looking for something inparticular? Thanks!
It's in the tile section at the back end of the row, at least in most of their stores. If its not there just ask someone in the flooring department, unlike Home Depot, Lowes actually has employees you can find. One thing to watch for is depth of the store bought moulding, make sure it doesn't hang down too far and inter fear with your drawers, if it does you can rip off the excess on a table saw
