- Q:I have done alot of 330's but never anthing beyond that. I will be buying A different rig to do it. anyting special i need to know. Looks the same to me other than I will be using a jeep and pilot cars sometimes. I hear it pays around $135.00 hr. Does that sound about right? I live in AZ.
- Well, I know a Deer 270 weighs around 64k LBS. and a 350 comes in at around 77k. The transport length is only a foot longer on the 350 and the width/hight is the same. There should be little difference between the 330 and the 345, I guess not enough that you would have any problems.

- Q:I am currently studying Anthropology, and someone told me that I could only dig in archeological sites if I had a BA in Archeology. I'm not sure if that is real or not.
- Huh? Plenty of people without degrees in anything have worked as supervised excavators and technicians on Archaeology digs. In fact, through organizations like Earthwatch or Crow Canyon, complete amateurs can pay to participate in field digs. So I'm not clear on what this person meant -- perhaps they misunderstood and thought you were asking if you could head up a dig yourself. In fact, at the University I attended Archaeology was considered a sub-field of Anthropology and you had to get your degree in Anthro even if you took the full curriculum for Archaeology. If you were intending to work on a field dig they would certainly prefer that you had taken courses that taught field techniques and standards so that you understood what needed to be done. Most Chief Investigators (who are directly responsible for the field operations and daily oversight) have PhD's in Archaeology. Even with a PhD you can't just go out and start digging anywhere you wish. There are protocols to be followed.

- Keep in mind that although this is a semi-arid snake, it does not mean it lives on sand at least not like what you would end up with in a tank. They're used to hard, compact, dry earth, not the loose dune-like sand that you'd be putting in the tank. If you want to use sand, mix it 1:3 with soil or a ground coconut bedding like Eco-Earth, and throw in a bit of cypress mulch. This would make for a more natural look, and give it a bit more traction. For a basic bedding, I'd suggest either cypress mulch (actually, go with hardwood mulch if you can, since cypress mulch is not very environmentally friendly) or aspen shavings. I'm partial to the aspen, myself.
- Q:Why do excavators use such complicated drive motors ?
- Actually, the drive system is relatively simple. You have a single engine running a hydraulic pump, and two hydrostatic drive motors on the track system that propel the machine. Beyond that you have two control handles that are tied into the main hydraulic valves with either electronic controls or pilot hydraulics that open and close valves to move the hoe. There are a lot of hoses, but the system itself is really pretty simple in design once you understand it.
- Q:How big of construction jobs can these do and can someone make a good living owning one where there is always construction going on? What kind of jobs and how big a job can these machines do?
- Small track hoes are used in jobs large and small. In almost any construction job, there are tight places that you can't work around with a large hoe. If you are digging a trench for a single electrical duct, you may only need a 6 wide trench, 3' deep. It would be almost silly to use a big machine for this work. Doing utility work in subdivisions where you have to work around fence lines and structures, a small hoe makes sense. But, you would also be in competition with the ditch witch equipment which come in walk-behind models, which are fun to use by the way. Something to consider - it is very easy for a contractor to rent a small piece of equipment to perform a few tasks that are subsidiary to a large job, rather than take on an additional subcontractor to perform the work, just because he happens to own the small machine required. Some contractors rent, rather than own, most of their trucks and machinery. So with only this one piece of equipment, you may not get many jobs on large construction sites. That leaves small jobs for homeowners or small businesses. I rented a nice little trackhoe that stated a 7' reach, or maximum trench depth. In actuality, that depth can only be achieved directly below the machine, so 4' to 5' was the maximum depth of trench I could actually attain. It had a small dozer blade that I thought would save me renting an actual dozer, but this blade almost seemed like a design after thought and was impractical for most conventional use. I ended up returning the machine and renting a dozer anyway.
