- Q: I just moved into an apartment building that apparently has a chronic problem with power surges. The power tends to go on and off several times a week, for no apparent reason. I know I need to buy power surge protectors for all my equipment, but I don't know what type. I've seen surge protectors (multi-plugs) that say 875 joules, 1,045 joules, and so on, but I don't know how to translate that in terms of equipmentFor example, I have a TV, DVD Videocassette player, and high-quality music equiment all plugged into a multi-plug in the living room. Should I buy a multi-plug power surge protector for this area, and what energy requirement should that surge protector have if I'm going to plug all that equipment onto it? What type of a power surge should I buy for my computer? What about the fridge? Air conditioner? Remember, I'm probably going to need to put power surge protectors all over the place, so which would be best for the different types of equipment in a home? Thanks!!!
- What i would do is buy the higher volume surge protectors. it might cost more but your stuff wont be junk when you have a surge.
- Q: Downstairs 4 outlets and 4 of the lights stopped working. One of the outlets that doesn't work has the top plugin socket working but the bottom one doesn't. Also 2 lights still work even though they are in rooms where the sockets don't work. At the time we did have two computers running from the outlets and maybe some other electrical stuff. When the electrical went out we heard electrical sparking sounds. Then like a couple months later it happened again but upstairs. The lights and outlets stopped working in 2 bedrooms and the bathroom. I don't think we had very much electrical equipment plugged in just maybe a hair straightener. If I reset the breaker the switch will move to where its supposed to be but nothing happens. How much money should I have on hand for the electrician approximately? $200? $1000?
- sounds like you have a problem with your outlet.wires are fed from the source Breaker Boxto a junction box where it branches offyoull have an outlet that should have 4 or more wires connectedthis is because the wiring goes into the outlet on one side and out on the other to feed another recepticle, light, switch etcif half of your outlet is not working, the contact plate inside brokeit may arc and start a fire. because the plate is broken, there is no output to the other devices connected.replace that outlet and check any nearby junction boxesmake sure wire caps are tight. to replace an outlet will costs you around 80 bucks for an electrician, or about 23 cents to do it yourself if you learn about wiring.
- Q: hi guyscan you explain in simple words what is earthing process and how it helps to secure human from detected current.thanks
- Earthing system helping for Human safety to avoid electrocution due to earth leakage.Earth is acting like a Huge conductor because of it minerals Moisture contend (water). If any electrical equipment Insulation failure leakage will be there ,if the same equipment is not Grounded ,there is a possibilitiesof getting electric shock to Human. If the same equipment is Grounded the leakage current will flow to Earth protect from electric shocks Trip the circuit. Pl. check this link for brief idea.
- Q: EMP is a byproduct of a nuclear explosion. It can cook solid state electronics and computers. The great danger is that nuclear air bursts can take down the computers that manage our banking, our record-keeping, and even the ones that manage our automobiles. The military services have taken some steps to protect their electronic systems from EMP, mainly by shielding. However few of our civilian electronic systems are protected in any way from this threat.Obviously there are two ways to deal with it right now. One is to prevent the explosion by deterring a nuclear attack. The other is to find some way to protect our senstive electronics. What should we do, and what can we do starting today?
- I would love to live in a non technological world like the victorian times when toilets were amazingly comforting and social interaction with the women was the talk of the night. Oh sorry, i forget this was about america, im sure with the budget you have to spend on this it will be enough to make it a top priority so it should not be too long, unless they are keeping it a secret from the public eyes till doomsday arrives to see if it works. Industrial work will be hard work, but i will be sure to have a jolly good time pumping water out by hand and employing kids to sweep chimneys. Also a few media tip offs say iran has enough for 5 nuclear weapons so if all air defense forces chip in around the world it will be a russian roulette to see what the outcome is to where they land. Whats to say that they might become duds and not explode? Also how long does the EMP last for? if it instantly kills the electronics surely they have replacement parts hidden away in a nuclear bunker where some tunnel rat worker will guard it till someone gives it a lick and tests them to see what a masterpiece the human race can acheive.
- Q: for my hair dryer and other electrical equipment
- Its a 3 pin plug herenot to worryjust get your stuffyou can buy a converter herealso electricity is 110V. so be mindful of that as well.cheers
- Q: I live in a condominium made of concrete without an electrical ground wire. Is it possible for me to hammer a nail into the concrete wall and attach the ground wire onto the nail. Will this be effective? If not can anyone please suggest a method for me to be able to ground my appliances. Much thanks in advance. My country/city has almost no electrical regulation/laws and the little that we have are barely implemented and never inspected.Safe DIY Guerilla methods are accepted
- Wisdumb, no, this will not work. A ground provides a substantial electrical connection to *the ground* one way or another. In the U.S, to provide a ground for a radio or T.V. antenna, a long copper-coated stake is driven into the ground, and the area around it is covered in salt to assist conductivity (water or rain dissolves the salt into the surrounding soil). A thick wire is then attached to the copper stake and then run to the antenna and mast. This may give you some ideas, but may not be fully effective for your needs. Maybe an electrician will answer. Good luck. Don't kill yourself.
- Q: I'm currently doing a 3 year advanced diploma for electronics engineering program. However, I don't feel it could really lead to much possibilities. What do people think? Are there any electronics engineers here in the room?? If so, what challenges do you face??
- It's pretty booming right now, and probably will be for the next couple of decades at least. As far as possibilities go, what are you looking for? Some EE's start their own companies and make millions. It's as much as what you make of things as it is about hopping on the right train to take you where you want to go. The downside of engineering has to be the pressure and the deadlines. Marketing and money drive engineering. And the market doesn't want to wait forever for the next gismo. Your design has to be finished by a certain time or else the whole bridge project gets held up, etc.
- Q: Hi!Is there an NEC section which addresses the following kitchen design? I'm working with an apartment complex and they've designed each unit's breaker box to be located directly over the stove top burners. Something just sounds real bad here - but, perhaps I worry about things melting when water is brought to a boil or the oven is at 450 F for an hour or so and the vent for the oven is directly through a back burner. [The door for the breaker box just clears the top of the stove top.]Thank you!!
- Look up working space Article 110, 110.26F a thru d. (exhibits 118,119.) Ref'd in from 408.8B 'Clearances. There might be some leeway offered in the requirement for a 'dedicated space` per 110.26 F, but I doubt it would ever go so far as to accept an apartment service panel mounted over a cooking appliance. Normally they're in hallways. While I can't find the reference to the hot environment that concerns you, it is a real problem. Breakers WILL trip prematurely in a hot environment. Due to the chance of vapors and condensation, it might even be considered a damp location. The grease that commonly collects above a stove would also be a concern. Is this the work of an architect? No engineer would put a panel there.
- Q: Are you taught job skills required to work for a company? or are you trained to specifically do a job like they trust your knowledge and teach you specifics?
- They generally don't teach you. They give you a job to do and you do it till you get it right. If you need info you research it or get assistance from other departments. You may go outside to another company for training on some specific issue or tool, instrument, skill etc. You will learn how to learn. They know you aren't an expert yet but one skill is rapid learning. The faster you pick up skills the more you will be paid. The outside learning should be paid for by the company. a second skill is negotiating with your boss to obtain the training. Be an avid reader of trade magazines to pick up secrets, info etc. Never stop learning.
- Q: Hi I have the chance to have a small premises at a garden center I would be allowed to advertise and was thinking of having a small studio thereI already have 2 home studio lights interfit background support and 3 backdrops I would be aiming to photography babies and childrendoes any one know what health and safety regulations i have to follow, what insurances is neededI already have equipment cover including my computer public liability and public indemnitydoes all equipment like the lights and backdrop have to be secured?do i have to have a credit card payment machine? basically i want to know every thingAndrea
- Disabled access. Public liability Insurance. Possibly a toilet and wash basin which should also be adapted for the disabled. Tea/coffee facilities. Certificate to say that you are allowed to carry out a business on the premises. (?) Certificate from from an electrician to say that the electricity supply is safe. Fire escape. Fire extinguishers. Certificate from the Fire brigade. Thats a start for you.
