- Q: What direction do solar panels usually point? North? East? South? West?
- The general answer is toward the equator, so south when the array is north of the Tropic of Cancer, and north when south of the Tropic of Capricorn. In the equatorial zone, one would often still point towards the equator, but other factors such as wanting the panels to efficiently drain rain and dew come into play. But wait, not so fast. Financial considerations dominate in some areas. When afternoon electricity costs more than morning electricity, it may pay to have panels oriented southwest in the northern hemisphere. Where electricity costs the same all day long, it may pay to orient the panels southeast, to harvest more in the morning, when temperatures are cooler, and the panels are more efficient. For solar hot water, SW is usually optimal in the northern hemisphere, because of higher ambient temperatures, and also the usage pattern of most people using the hot water when they get home in the evening. A local installer that has been around for several years will know what orientation is optimal for your area.
- Q: Solar panel packages have different levels of power. For instance you can get a kw system but is this kw per hour or day. How does this work?
- kW is the unit of measurement used. kWh means you have kW steady for an entire hour. In the case of solar panels, say you are using 00W panels. That means at any given time assuming ample sunlight is hitting the panel, it is producing 00W. You wanted a kW so you will need ten panels at 00W (less or more depending on the rating of the panel) this will give you kW. That means at any given time you can get as many watts as needed up to kW (000W). Say the sun hits the panels for eight hours a day, you will have kWh each of those eight hours, or 8kWh per day. Unless you have a system of batteries to capture unused power, you will only be able to use up to kW (000W) at any given time, any unused power will be wasted. Solar panels alone are not like a generator, they do not slow down or speed up depending on demand. Even with no load on them, they will produce as much power as they are able, and without batteries that power is lost. To simply answer your question, if you get a kW system, that means kW per hour.
- Q: im aware i dont fully understand. but with what i do. if P = iv, and current changes with voltage, whats the point of changing either. if in any cicumstance, you end up with the same wattage, how does changing either effect a solar setup. (2v panel vs 24v)thanks in advance. explain in laymans if you can.
- The choice of solar panel voltage comes down more to what the panels will be connected to. You're right that power can remain the same at the different voltages. Higher input (panel) voltages are sometimes used in inverter systems to reduce the effect of voltage draw-down. 2v panels (about 20v open circuit) work well for charging 2v batteries, connected in parallel, through a charge controller. For use of a grid-tie inverter, higher input voltages are sometimes used to reduce the effects of draw-down. You want to select and wire (parallel vs. series) your panels based on the input voltage requirement of the load, whatever it may be.

- yes they are very recyclable, and you would actually be suprised at how much you get back from them just as materials, as there are still very valuable materials in them.... Often solar shops will accept them back for at a fraction of what you paid, as they can send them back to the manufacturer who then do all the material stripping in them and recycle all the materials there. Mainly depends what type of solar panels you have.... Most probably poly-chystalline or mono-chystalline. If they are that cool blue or black psychadelic looking panel also the manufacturing make that effect is also costly so they would probably look to buying that as well.. I would ask a solar shop where it can be done as the silicon in them are still a very prescious substance..... I would definatly not throw them out or pull them apart just yet

- Hello, okorder . Look at some videos ( There are few hundred of them ) Basically though they all stay with the same idea or plan. Look at how they wire them and get more familiar with what they are running on them depending upon how much wattage panel they are running. I seen a 400 watt system costing about 600 dollars US currency. Because two 200 watt panels = 50.00 each and the diverter = 50 and the charge controller = another 50.00 at the least. Then you have wiring and some deep cycle 2 or 6 volt batteries to loop up which is extra cost if none laying around to use. Check-out youtube though for the best advice and opinion you can give yourself then maybe look at a few solar panel websites which sell Solar kits for some more price ideas. To run a laptop i assume you will need atleast 400 watts and 2 to 4 ,twelve volt batteries which are deep cycle and it might take 3 to 5 days to charge up your batteries but they should charge laptop battery no problem without much loss if you keep laptop charged often. TV is power hungry and you will need something like a $500.00 system for that. 000 watts etc. Tv just drains the battery bank way too fast. So to answer your question about what you can get for 200 bucks. Maybe a 80 watt kit system for about 250 bucks complete except batteries. with 80 watts you could power some cool nighttime night lighting with super bright LEDS or LED light strips which are about 0.3 watts per LED or 5 watt LED cabinet lights work well So for a 80 watt system you probably only want one 2 volt battery or else will take alot longer to charge on such low wattage. But you could run LED lighting for nighttime lighting and easily save 250 dollars in a year off your bill by charging phone from it, using LED lights and other low wattage devices if utilized daily. Just don't draw more power than it makes and it should be ok. Goodluck with your research.
