- Q: I am restoring an older , but good piece of machinery. It sat for many years, so it's really really dirty and showing some rust and paint wear. I do not want to wash it and get water all over it so it starts rusting the gearing, and tooling surfaces. What do you recommend to start getting this beast clean, so I can work on it without getting really, really dirty? Is there a spray or should I use something like ...WD-40? How about the chemical RESTORE they show on the $19.95 TV Ads??? Used to restore the faded paint on a car or clean the headlight lens from oxidation??
- There are degreaser products, but those are fairly aggressive and intended for really gummy congealed lubricant removal. WD-40, while less aggressive, is still a pretty good solvent as well as a light lubricant. If you need a lot of it, they sell it in 1 gallon cans (and probably larger sizes for industrial use), and they have pump sprayers to use with that size. I think a product for use on headlights or faded paint would be more of a polish than a degreaser, so that would not be appropriate unless you're trying to clean up a plastic viewing window or some such plastic guard, shield, etc.

- at power plants (electricty generating stations), they use steam pressure to turn large turbine blades. the shaft of the turbine is coupled (connected) to a generator. Around the neighborhood after a storm/power outage, private citizens use small gasoline powered engines to turn small generators. There are a zillion others to numerous to mention but I'll go until they stop popping into my brain--- diesel/ natural gas/ waste boiler heat, hydroelectric at a dam, the little thing on you bicycle that rubs along the wheel and turns on the lights, gilligan pedaling that bike .....

- China in about 40 to 500 thousand years ago, there have been processing crude scraperschoppers and three prismatic tip like device primitive tools. 4~5 years ago appeared grinding technology, many stone tools have been relatively smooth, blade is also sharp, and has a single edge, double blade, convex blade, concave blade and round blade of the points.

- try a hotel ;-). If you live in or are going to a cold climate, an ice house could be useful. You could give it power with the steam engine, and use the electricity to run a small heater, xbox, and other necessities. (i don't think a fridge would be necessary) I heard some dude actually made a working ice house like that, but it ran on solar power.

- A machine is a devise that uses energy to perform some activity. A factory that makes these, could be called a machinery, or just a collective name for a lot of machines!

- Find a local thrift/antiques shop. They will know of appraisers in your area. BTW: Unless the tools belonged to his father they are just old tools. Some people like displaying old tools in their work hop, but unless they are im mint conditoin they arn't worth all that much.
