- Ferrets should NEVER have any kind of wood shavings, they cause respiratory problems and some like pine and such are toxic to ferrets!!! Ferrets need blankets as bedding, they should have a very dark area to sleep, and line the cage with either carpet or linoleum onlyThey can ONLY eat meat (their bodies cant digest grains, fruits, vegetables or anything with fiber in it) so dont ever put straw or hay in with them! I URGE you to purchase the book Ferrets for dummies by Kim Schilling, its a MUST have for ferret owners or future owners, it will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know about ferrets!!! Plus its just a great book and you will learn so much from it, I know I did!!!! Oh and 1 more thing, dont build a cage for them out of wood, ferrets have a musk and that musk as well as body oils seep into the wood and it holds the smell, and that would cause the bad ferret smellPlus if ANY urine gets on the wood you will never be able to get the smell outDo some research, you'll learn alot and you'll find out the do's and don'ts.there are so many that I cant fit in this answer, Im just telling you the basics so you can have a happy healthy and not smelly ferret!!!
