- There are basically two things you can do to adjust a pattern when you don't have the yarn recommendedFirst of all, you need to determine your gauge you get with the new yarnThen you will need to re-write your pattern to adjust the number of stitches so that the size will remain the sameHowever, because you are using a different weight of yarn, the fabric will not be the sameThe drape, the fitting, the finish and the overall look of the fabric just may be too different and you will not get the same effectThe second thing you can do is find another yarn that has the same characteristics as the one recommended in the patternThe fibre content can be different, but the size of the yarn must be the sameThe fibre is important for the way the finished fabric will behaveSome yarns will stretch badly, and this is important in a dressSome yarns don't have the drape, or the sheen, or the bounceSo while you can find another yarn that will knit up the same, it may not quite behave as the original yarn wouldSo in the end, the yarn suggested in the instructions is still the best, if you want to get the same kind of dressUsing another yarn, different weight, fibre content, colour all means it will not look the same when you are finished knitting itIf that is important, then you need to reconsider your choice of yarn.
