- Q: I'm trying to install a handrail on a small set of concrete stairs. I drilled/chiseled two 3 inch deep holes for the newel posts. Do I simply put the posts in and add the cement? My fear is that once the cement dries, the cemented newel post quot;plugquot; will not adhere and be able to be pulled out of the hole. Do I have to do anything special to make sure this doesn't happen?
- I would probably cement an anchor into the hole you have carved. It looks like a metal rod with some ears to keep it from being pulled out, and a bracket on top that a 4x4 post can be bolted in to. Once you have your wood post secured to this, buy some 1 wood trim (like a couple 1x4's and a couple 1x6's)to cover the structural post. Glue with liquid nails and secure with a few brads or finish nails. Now you have a decent looking post that is secured to the ground and will probably take quite a hit before you could break it off. Finish the top with some type of decoration of your choice.
- Q: How can I dizzolve the cement that the dentist puts in you mouth to seal in a pallet expander? Can i use a house hold fluid? Or can i chip it away? Or what?
- There is no way to dissolve it. Is there excess cement on your tooth or gums or are you wanting to take the expander out? If it is excess glue go back to your orthodontist, it will just take a second for them to get it off. If you are trying to remove your expander I highly advise you not to. You can severely damage you teeth and cause permanent damage. Never try to do something your self that needs to be done by a professional.
- Q: I have a waterfall, built with cinder block, covered in flat slate and other flat slate I need to add dimension as it looks like like a cemetery marker. I need to add some rock, slate and shale but do not know what would be a quick set or how to go about it. It is a neat heavy waterfall about 4 feet tall with a stair step sidesWe are very handy and can do anything so we need real honest experience d answers from people in the know.We live in Fl. so we are rain filled in the afternoons so it has to be quick dry. Thanks for all your informationTwo Seniors
- Don't let the latin daunt you- google image search them and you'll find what you like...Good luck!
- Q: Eucalyptus leaves were left on the front porch. It rained. Evidently, they are treated with some type of coloring agent and it dripped from the leaves to the porch cement leaving a bluish stain. The tint washed right off my hands, but not so with the cement which absorbed it like an easter egg.I've tried soap and water -- no good.Krud Kleaner with a wire brush -- faded it a little.OxyClean with a toothbrush -- faded it a little more. But, the stain is still there and very visible. Is there anything that will get it out? Bleach, maybe...vinegar ???Help! Thanks.
- use outdoor bleach instead of regular household bleach. should clear the stain right up
- Q: cement industries
- Although I am not first hand in the cement/concrete industry, water extends the tooling's life and most important, it keeps the dust down so you have a lesser chance of getting lung disease from the dust. I forget what it's called right now. We do a lot of core drilling in our line of work those are the reasons for the water.
- Q: I'm a student, now studying about derivatives. In type of commodity options, why do we have wheat options, oil options, gold options... why don't we have cement options? And please let me know, is there any qualification, any criteria for choosing a goods to be an underlying asset of a derivative?
- Well, first off we don't exactly have wheat options, oil options, and gold options. We have wheat, oil, and gold futures options (there probably exist options on these cash commodities but they aren't exchange traded and would generallynot be available to joe investor). If you are trading options on these commodities, upon exercise of the option you receive position in a futures contract not a position inn the commodity. That means your question is really, why aren't there cement futures contracts. The answer is: a) They have thought about them in some places at various times. A couple of years ago, they tried to get one going in India but some regulatory board nixed it for reasons unknown to me. b) Cement prices are relatively stable (and low). Cement sells for $100/ton (I think) and just doesn't vary much. c) Partly because of b) there is no need to hedge cement and a commodity with very stable prices would not entice many specuators. If the price of something is currently stable, introducing a futures contract and speculation to try to maake the commodity price unstable so people will hedge it and use futures contracts would be terribly abusive to the economy. d) Cement is usually a small component of the price of any project using large amounts of cement. The big expense is usually the construction expenses surrounding the cement and moving concrete. Thus, even if cement prices were variable, the variability would only contribute to variable costs of a project in a samll way and so probably not be worth hedging. e) If CBOT or CME thought it would be successful and they could get CFTC to go along with it they would offer cement futures in a Chicago second.
- Q: What is water cement ratio?
- Well buddy that depends on your concrete design, don't you think? The highter the ratio is the less strength the concrete will developt. That's why, if you have the workers making the concrete, to check them so they dont add more water so it be easier to handle it.
- Q: Wet CementAs I walk past the old sidewalkMemories race through my mindThose little kids; they wrote in chalkBut we, we wrote on wet cementYou took a stick and wrote our namesWith a cute little heart in betweenA smile spread on both our facesBut that was when we were fourteenThose words on wet cementWill never fade awayThough I cannot say the sameFor each word you say?2008====please give me some feedback and maybe how i can make the poem better. thanks :)
- Quite a nice little poem. It reminds me when the poor trees were filled with hearts and initials of young lovers. As the tree got old so the the carvings got bigger, just like some of our waistlines. I often pass a paving stone with initials dating from 1965. Your last stanza seems to say that things have not worked out for you both, but the initials will still be there to remind you of what once was. 7/10
- Q: whats the risk of having a house on a cement slab? what are the positives and the negatives? and how long do they last? ?
- Some thoughts to consider: First, If you live in a climate that gets any kind of cold weather the slab will feel cool or even cold to the touch. The solution to this is to put in a hydronic in-slab heat. Even if you don't put the hydronic heat in, do put rigid foam insulation under the slab, it WILL save money on heating costs (unless you live in a tropical climate). Second, if you do put tile on the slab, be sure to use a membrane between the tile and the slab. It will add a little cost, but if you don't, any cracks in the concrete will just come through and crack your tile (and you know what they say about concrete, there's two kinds, concrete that's cracked and concrete that's going to crack). Third, DO NOT let anyone talk you into putting forced air ducts under the slab unless they use the blue plastic HK duct. The HK seals completely. If they use the old PVC style duct under the slab you WILL get mold in the ductwork. Slab homes can be fine, if they're built right. They will last just as long as a home with a basement or crawlspace.
