Aluminium foil acts as a total barrier to light and oxygen (which cause fats to oxidise or become rancid), odours and flavours, moistness, and germs, it is used broadly in food and pharmaceutical packaging. The purpose of aluminium is to make long-life packs (aseptic processing|aseptic packaging) for drinks and dairy goods, which allows storing without refrigeration. Aluminium foil containers and trays are used to bake pies and to pack takeaway meals, ready snacks and long life pet foods.

Aluminium foil is widely sold into the consumer market, often in rolls of 500 mm (20 in) width and several metres in length. It is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it, for example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator (where it serves the additional purpose of preventing odour exchange), when taking sandwiches on a journey, or when selling some kinds of take-away or fast food. Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States, for example, typically provide take-away burritos wrapped in aluminium foil.

Aluminium foils thicker than 25 μm (1 mil) are impermeable to oxygen and water. Foils thinner than this become slightly permeable due to minute pinholes caused by the production process.

Aluminium foil has a shiny side and a matte side. The shiny side is produced when the aluminium is rolled during the final pass. It is difficult to produce rollers with a gap fine enough to cope with the foil gauge, therefore, for the final pass, two sheets are rolled at the same time, doubling the thickness of the gauge at entry to the rollers. When the sheets are later separated, the inside surface is dull, and the outside surface is shiny. This difference in the finish has led to the perception that favouring a side has an effect when cooking. While many believe that the different properties keep heat out when wrapped with the shiny finish facing out, and keep heat in with the shiny finish facing inwards, the actual difference is imperceptible without instrumentation. The reflectivity of bright aluminium foil is 88% while dull embossed foil is about 80%.

Q: if the sphere were perfectly round and the walls were highly reflective to visible light, what would happen
I don't see that it would hurtJust cut out a circular piece about 1 1/2 wide and set it on top of the outer edgeIf you're worried, just check it every few minutesNecessity-the mother of invention!
Q: Can you smoke marijuana in an aluminum foil pipe?
Yes,you can,as long as you don't mind aluminum pulsing through your body along with your blood. It most likely wouldn't bother you for 30 or 40 years. That's a long time from now and i bet you don't think you are going to live that long-do you?Smoke only through papers, brass or glass so you don't lose your memory by shorting out your brain's electrical system with metal.Thin aluminum foil will introduce aluminum into the smoke when heated.Very bad-don't do it.
Q: I wanted to eat a bowl of ramen noodlesThis type though, can't really cook it in a microwave, since there seems to be a small trace of aluminum foil covered at the bottom of the lidHowever since I had no pots to boil some water, I decided that the only form of cooking the ramen was through a microwave While it was cooking, the lid opened and so the aluminum was exposed in the microwave environmentNo sparks were produced, so I thought it was safe (Ex: putting a metal spoon in a microwave doesn't produce any sparks)Anyways, after eating the noodles, my stomach became upset but not to the point where I had to vomit or anything like that.Afterwards I felt fine and thought that it was probably just the ramenA couple of weeks later I did the same thing, and again my stomach felt irritated again and i stopped eating it.Now for some reason,I am paranoid that the aluminum foil part of the lid had something to do with my irritated stomachShould I be concerned about my health?
your answere is incompleteit isent clearmake a cake, make a cake for what?! i cant have an aswere if your question isent complete.
Q: I'm going camping with my 25 year old daughter this weekendThere is a charcoal grill at our siteIdeas for lunch and breakfast? I plan on chicken and salmon for dinnersThanks.
No list from meMy mother's microwave blew up once thoughIt was nasty stuff.
Q: I have made spiral sliced ham before following the directions on the package and it always seems to come out dryWell I'm in Germany with the military this year and my ham came without any instructions and I cant' remember how long to cook it and can't seem to find anything on the net about it.
People say it's bad with alummin foil which it is but I have smoked out of it more than once and I'm fine? Lol and when I have nothing to smoke out of I just get a soda can , i think it's way easier (: matches work have fun lol
Q: the tank has repti bark on the right(where her heating pad, lights, and hide is) and eco earth natural soil on her left (where her water dish is and a cork log)I heard using aluminum foil and cling rap help butthe humidity always goes down to 30-40% and i want to keep it at at least 65%If i use aluminum foil how will the light get into the tank if 3/4 of the screen have to be covered? Also, how does the cling wrap one work? Should i use a damp towel on 1/2 the screen and aluminum/cling wrap on 1/4 of the screen?Do you put the cling wrap on top of the screen or under it so its kind of in the terrarium but under the screen?Other humidity idea's too plz!THANX!!!
DO NOT put your water dish on or near heat source (it can cause bacteria ) get a tupper ware tub about 4 x3 ins put some 4 mill holes(about as many as you can really) in it and fill with wet tissue paper/sfagnum moss that is what i do to keep humidity also obtain a digital hygrometer it will pay off as normal bubble ones are not accurate GET YOURSELF a good book and keep learning
Q: I have my aluminum rims, theyre black, the lip is aluminum steelI want to paint them goldbut keep the aluminum lipPlease tell me how to, what sand paper, primer and paint, some of the best paint, i want it to lastAlso, if I clear coat it will it last longer?
This Site Might Help YouRE: My wilton spring form round cake pan i just bought are leaking, what can i do? I bought these 3 diff size Wilton round cake pans.they are spring formI put cake batter in them and put hem in the oven and the cake pans are leaking at the bottom where the spring pan come together to release the cake.what can i do?
Q: Buoyancy: How to best construct a boat out of a small square of aluminum foil.?
Design the foil shape to displace the most waterThis shape will then hold the most weightNo sure what shape that is.
Q: Is that ok? Or not? :D today i stretched my normal earring hole (18g) to 2mm (12g)
That is a HUGE stretch for one day its ok as long as your body is reacting ok to the stretchYou have to make sure the needle is sterilized each time before you stretch use alcohol swabs to clean your ears and use disinfectant soap to wash your handsStretching can easily lead to infection (like a new piercing can) but as long as it isn't to painful, its fineI doubt you will be able to continue stretching at that rate tho the larger the hole, the sorer your ear is after stretching! Good luck )
Q: plsexplain why
When looking at the periodic table, you can determine the number of valence electrons from the Roman numeral that precedes the A or B at the top of the columnFor example, aluminum is in group IIIA, and so aluminum has three valence electronsChlorine is in group VIIA, and chlorine has seven valence electronsZinc in in group IIB and has two valence electronsThis works for all for the groups except for group VIII, Fe, Co and Ni families Follow up For me and my students, who are not in Europe, there is no confusion with the A and B notationIt makes perfect sense and has for decadesThe A-column elements are the representative elements and the B-column elements are the transition metalsGroup VIII (Fe, Co, and Ni) doesn't give the number of valence electrons but neither does 8, 9 or 10The impetus for the 1-18 revision by the IUPAC was one of compromise, and like many compromises, it lost some of the usefulness of the system it replacedThis is why, at my behest, the periodic table that is part of the reference package for the end-of-course test in North Carolina has both the 1-18 labeling as well as the A and B labeling(I was part of the committee that developed the NC state chemistry curriculum in 1998 and 2003.) For groups 1-11 (Cu group) the group number indicates the number of valence e?Does this imply that copper has eleven valence electrons? If the valence electrons are those that are involved in reactions, then you cannot say that copper realistically has 11 valence electronsNot all of the electrons in the 4s and 3d are going to be involved in reactionsAnd the same is true for Fe, Co, and NiFor all practical purposes, the number of valence electrons tops out about 6 for metals and certainly no more than 8.
