Q:I got a really great deal on 2 houses because they were fixer-uppers. I'm living in one and the other I'm renting out. However, the previous owner did everything himself in 950 95, so needless to say, things are not to todays standards. Both houses need rewiring (there are no ceiling lights, few outlets, and mine has two old fuse boxes and the other has a breaker box but it pops the breaker a lot). The only reason they are still functional is because both houses use natural gas for water and heat, so otherwise, they electrical work is getting us by, but who knows for how long. I thought that maybe instead of redoing the electric, that I could just add solar panels to compensate for the small electric boxes. Also, since I would have to hire electricians to do all the work, which would be more cost effective (not including the decrease in utilities since I don't pay the utilities in the rental anyways)?
A solar panel does not replace the wiring in your house. All it does is supply power to the house, the same way a line in from the street does. After the power gets to the house, regardless of how it got to your house, it goes through exactly the same wiring to get to outlets and lights. Your problem is not that the power coming in from the street is insufficient; the power company can supply all you'd ever need. The problem is that your houses are not wired to receive or use more power. You need to upgrade the service panel so it can bring more power into the house, and upgrade the wiring inside the walls so you have the number of outlets and lights required by today's codes and which most of us need for all the things we plug in these days. Solar panels, while they are cheaper than ever, are not a low cost thing to install. It will take years to recover their cost, and if the rules are the same where you are as they are here, you can't use the cost of installing them as a write-off against the cost of the house until you sell it. They are a capital expense, not a maintenance and repair deduction which you can use each year against the income you receive from the rental. Doing a conventional rewiring is your best bet.
Q:HIToday i was using my BB gun and shot my dads solar panel. I want to fix it for him because he spent a lot of time trying to get the solar panels. All i broke was the glass on the front, what is the glass and where can i buy new glass for it?
Note: he didnt buy them, we found them at a property that we bought
Q:I want to also know if the 0 watt rating on the solar panel is 0 watts per day or is it constantly adding 0 watts? Is there a time which the 0 watts is being added like 0 watts per second or 0 watts per minute and so on?
a 0w solar panel means at peak efficiency ( high noon, panel pointed flat at the sun, hitting it at 90 degrees), you will get 0 watts (at any given second). Watts = volts x amps a 2volt battery needs an incoming current of at least 3 volts to charge it; 3.5 volts is better. so if the output VOLTAGE of the panel is less than 3 volts it wont do anything. Even if it is, 0 / 3.5 = .74 amp.( three quarters). It will take forever and a day to charge a deeply discharged deep cycle battery.......... consider that a small 0v battery charger is putting out 3-5 amps ( or 3 x 0 =330 Watts) and the alternator on a car is putting out 20 to 50 amps at 4 volts ( 280 to 730 Watts).
Q:Could you have a solar panel in space that would transmit electricity remotely? Maybe have some kind of receiving antenna to pick up the energy? Perhaps there could be a string of them orbiting the Earth? Why wouldn't that work?
Absolutely. Many satellites and other spacecraft that have been launched throughout history carry solar panels to power themselves. The International Space Station alone has hundreds of square meters of solar panels. Transmitting the power from one place to another wirelessly is a bit more difficult, but not fundamentally impossible. So far we don't have any good technology to do it over long distances. But we're getting there. One proposed future source of power is 'solar power satellites', orbiting devices that would collect sunlight and turn it into a microwave laser that would be fired down to the Earth and collected in a giant dish kind of like a radio telescope. The idea is that this would be non-polluting, environmentally friendly, reliable, would help to boost investment in space technologies, and wouldn't take up the large amounts of land area required for traditional solar power. However, some people have argued that it is a bad idea on the basis that if the laser accidentally missed the dish, and came down in an inhabited area, it might cause human fatalities or damage to the environment or human artifacts.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on a residential community?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on a residential community. Many residential communities are adopting solar energy as a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to traditional electricity sources. Installing solar panels in residential communities can help reduce energy costs, decrease reliance on fossil fuels, and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
Q:I have several 6v 4.5a sealed lead acid batteries. I would like to hook one of them up to a solar panel and have it stay charged from the solar panel all the time, but not overcharged. Is there a simple way to do this with an IC or something? I am only a beginner with circuits so I want it to be something very easy to make. Basically, I want it to stay charged all the time so it's available if I need it for a power out or something.Thanks.
Yes, you can purchase a solar photovoltaic array to keep your batteries charged. You will need a Photovoltaic Cell Panel that produces 27 + watts (6volts x 4.5 amps = 27 watts) at 6 volts of electricity, a Charge Controller that allows only 4.5 amps of power through to the battery and will reduce the amps as the battery nears full charge and shut off the Panel when the battery is fully charged, and a 6v. Battery. Figure you will need a photovoltaic panel capable of producing a minimum of 27 watts if you are going to charge a completely dead 6 v. battery in one day. (with a clear sky). The way the system works is the sunlight strikes the cells on the panel and releases the excess electrons in the cells, they travel along central wires to your battery and charge the battery. When the sun sets, the procedure is reversed and the electrons flow backwards from the battery, into the photovoltaic cells. That is where the Charge Controller is needed. It acts a one way gate and lets the electrons go into the battery, but won't let them go backwards to the Panel. Just set your panel in the sun at the optimum angle for the season and your latitude on earth, connect the charge controller and then the battery, and it will keep your battery charged. Don't waste your money on the small wattage solar photovoltaic systems that claim to keep your battery charged. They simply can't do it unless your battery is in like new condition and is fully charged when they are hooked up. If you battery is a few months old, the small wattage photovoltaic systems can't keep up with the loss of power from sulfation inside the battery.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on refugee camps?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on refugee camps. In fact, solar energy is often a viable and sustainable solution for providing electricity in these camps. Solar panels can be easily installed on rooftops or in open spaces, helping to meet the energy needs of refugees and improve their living conditions. Solar power can provide lighting, power for charging electronic devices, and even help run water pumps or refrigeration units. Its renewable nature and independence from the grid make it an ideal energy source for refugee camps, where access to reliable electricity is often limited.
Q:How do solar panels affect the property's sustainable development goals?
Solar panels can greatly contribute to a property's sustainable development goals by providing clean and renewable energy. By harnessing the power of the sun, solar panels reduce reliance on fossil fuels, decrease carbon emissions, and promote environmental sustainability. Additionally, the installation of solar panels can lead to long-term cost savings on electricity bills, enhancing economic sustainability. Overall, solar panels play a crucial role in advancing a property's sustainable development goals by supporting both environmental and economic sustainability.
Q:I'm looking for some advice on hot water solar panels. I'm trying to save some money on electricity. A neighbor has been suggesting solar powered equipment for some time now, and I think he's right. It does save quite a bit of money in the long run. They're kind of expensive though, so I'm looking for cheaper alternatives.
If you are just looking for hot water, you can build your own water pre-heater with copper tubing, mirrors, black engine paint, wood for an enclosure, and glass to cover the enclosure. I have seen plans online but cannot recall just now where. I've included some links below that you might want to check out. Also, you may want to check on tax rebates in your area for using solar. In some areas you can get rebates to pay nearly 00% of the cost. Or search for how to build a solar water heater for a LOT of online sites. One caution, do NOT use water directly from a solar water heater as it can be hot enough to burn your skin.
Q:Can solar panels be installed on research facilities or laboratories?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on research facilities or laboratories. In fact, many research facilities and laboratories have started to adopt solar energy to reduce their carbon footprint and dependence on traditional energy sources. Solar panels can be installed on rooftops or open spaces adjacent to the facility, providing clean and sustainable energy to power various equipment and operations. Additionally, the installation of solar panels on research facilities can serve as a demonstration of renewable energy technologies and encourage further adoption within the scientific community.
