- Q: I am installing 13x13 porcelain tile on a wall. Should I leave a 1/4‘‘ gap for grout or can I butt them up tight for a smaller grout line?
- Tile with no gap will not accept grout. A gap less than 1/8 will accept on non-sanded grout. Most large tiles are set with a 1/4 gap or a bit more. That will accept sanded grout. It's very difficult to get butted tile perfectly straight on a wall so it will look good afterward. If that wall is in a wet location, you definitely need grout.
- Q: for making cement decorative hand made cement tile there is device sometime call cookie cutter also to portrait some design is called divider
- The metal frame that divides the tile into different sections is made from strips of metal carefully bent and soldered into place. I have seen steel ones and also brass mold patterns. The key to it is to have the bottom of the strips perfectly flat and level so that when you pour in the liquid cement mix, each color stays in its own compartment. See the link below to see a mold pattern and also the finished tile from it. A lot of history and more photos are on the second link.
- Q: For a while now I have just used paper towels as a substrate for my 2 leopard geckos and I recently have been researching slate tiles as a substrate and I want to give it a try due to the positive feedback i‘ve seen on message boards and care sheets. Now, I have 2 10 gallon tanks that I would like to use but details are lacking from an online source.1. What measurements should i ask for when getting a piece of slate cut(for a generic 10 gallon tank)?2. Is there a certain thickness the slate should be for proper heat disbursement?3. How warm should the slate be allowed to get if i‘m monitoring it with a thermometer? I know I could measure out the tank myself, but I was just curious if there was a size that fit better than what a measurement would give me. Thank you for the feedback.
- whats up, the final substrate to apply for person leopard geckos is youngster's play sand. in case you have a youthful gecko, it extremely is ultimate to place those on paper towel to dodge impaction, till they're approx. 6 inches long. Impaction skill that the gecko has eaten the substrate and can't bypass it - inflicting ailment! a lot of hides could be placed via the viv and counting on what number geckos are housed jointly, a minimum of a million humidity cover. good success.

- Q: The grout in my bathroom is cracking bad and i just had it installed a little over a year ago. I called a different tile guy to look at it and tell me why its cracking. So im trying to figure out who riped me off or whos trying to rip me off. this new tile guy said the grout is cracking because the other tile guy didnt pull the old vinyl up. I remember the other tile guy told me that the vinyl was my moisture barrier so i didnt need anything put on the floor other than the glue ( or whatever you call it) So this new tile guy is saying thats the reason why my grout is cracking because he needed to pull up the old vinyl and the grout would continue to crack until that was done. So that means i need my whole floor re-done with new tile.....so is this new tile guy telling me the truth. Can you install tile over vinyl?
- The first guy totally B.S.ed you. Tile needs to be installed on concrete backer board that is glued and screwed to the sub-floor. Laying is directly on top of old vinyl is totally half ***-ed and will certainly cause problems down the road.
- Q: Looking to install ceramic tile over concrete basement slab, 12x12 or 13x13 tiles. Main question is how perfectly level/flat does the concrete need to be. If I put a tile down and there is some minor rocking is that no good or will the thinset adhesive take care of that.
- Any rocking means the tile is hitting either a high spot or there is a low spot. Low spots can be dealt with the thin set. As long as its less than a 1/4. High spots usually needs to be ground down flat. So to answer your question , for ease of installation and the prevention of cracked tiles at a later date, floors need to be as flat as possible. If you have minor rocking with no thin set down, in some cases a larger sized trowel will do the trick. Each case is different and has to be dealt with differently. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there. GL
- Q: how to tile vanity top and back splash?
- Yes, if you want the tile job to hold up. The backer board must be water resistant because of the location. It is rigid and gives a firm solid surface to lay the tiles on - otherwise they'll eventually start coming off and you'll have to re-do the job.
- Q: I‘m remodeling my kitchen and there is ugly floor to ceiling wall tile. My contractor says can‘t put up drywall without reframing (which would be expensive). So does anyone have suggestion on what to do with this wall?
- What do you want to do? You can tile again directly over them with new tile for an up dated look. Yes you can take them off but depending on what the previous person set the tiles with it can be easy to remove or an SOB. Its a dusty , dangerous ( at least if your not careful ) job and if the proper glue was used it really can be hard to get off. You ll need a hammer, wide masonry chisel, safety glasses , gloves, long sleeve shirt and ear plugs to keep out the flying debris. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar and check my qualifications there.. GL
- Q: I installed tile couple of days ago in my shower. I was wondering isn't it better to put bathroom caulking instead of grout since it is flexible and it will last longer and provide better water resistance. Does grout make tile stronger or is caulking only applied on edges? Would I make mistake if I used bathroom caulking between tiles? Thanks
