- Q: Why might energy from the solar panels sometimes be near zero even in the summer?
- Because when the sun is down there is no solar energy, therefore they produce zero energy. This can happen any time of the year when the sun has set. But not to worry, they the sun will rise the next day. ;-) If you need constant power, it is best to connect the solar panels to the grid or to batteries to have power throughout the day and night too !
- Q: I'm thinking of these solar panels that people have on their rooftops in domestic properties. I suppose I mean after how long do you break even with respect to just carrying on without them and getting you electricity from the utilities companies? Or answer in any way you think is pertinent. The more info the better.
- The payback period for a solar PV installation is based upon the cost of the installation compared to the savings achieved. Therefore if you installed a modest set of panels yourself, did not need on site electrical storage and did not have any permitting fees but did enjoy rebates you would be doing better than if the installation costs were high, the solar equipment was expensive, you had to purchase storage batteries, it was costly to maintain and permitting was absurd. On the other side of the equation if your electrical use is high, you perhaps own an EV or you can sell power at a high rate then the costs you will be offsetting will be higher and the payback period will be lower. If your electrical use is minimal, there is no time of use metering available the payback period will be higher. Some of the costs you may be offsetting may not be electrical. If you concurrently purchased an EV then you may be offsetting the cost of gasoline which would be higher than electricity. Overall rebates and incentives play a major role. - Q: My project needs to build a thermal solar panel that would be used as a demonstrational rig. The dimensions i am allowed do not allow me to use a normal thermal solar panel so i have decided to use the heat exchanger from the back of a fridge. Although this is possible to use what equation would i use to prove the power of the sun would actually heat up the water. More importantly when the rig is demonstrated to students, they will need to be able to determine if the raise in temperature given by the thermometers is what should be given. Variables of the rig will include: Angle of the panel, Light intensity, Direction of panel, and more importantly the flow rate of the water travelling through the pipes. What equation includes those variables (change in temperature, flow rate) and would allow me to incorporate the angle of the panel. The light source would be a lamp so i would also need to know how much of the energy from the lamp is actually being used by the panel?

- Q: I was just wondering what the minimum and maximm charging voltage and ampere is for li ion batteries. If i connect a solar panel, which only gets enough sunshine to generate voltage, will that still charge the battery, or would i have to series connect solar panels until they together reach 3,7volt?
- One lithium cell requires 4.2V to obtain its full charge, Never exceed 4.2V ! Output from solar panel if below 3.7V , nothing charge to lithium. Total charging time until the cell is full depending on the AH rate of cell and the charging current that solar panel can be provided. Suppose cell is rate 5AH, and the charging current from solar panel under full sun shine can maintain 0.5A ( use solar panel short circuit current rate from its specification as a reference ) , hence, 0 hours is enough. And be sure the solar panel can maintain 4.2V output at 0.5A . Remember, over charge lithium cell one time might reduce its life into half . Therefore, let the solar panel output passing through a precision regulator to maintain output is 4.2V is the best way, because, as cell reaches 4.2V , no more charging current is forced into cell ( automatic stop charging ). If you do not have the knowledge to make this simple variable voltage regulator with LM37K ( if you choose this way, buy solar panel output has at least 2V) , you may choose to do it manually by install a current meter and a variable resistor in series between the panel output to cell. By adjust the value of resistor, charging current can be controlled ( if you choose this way, buy solar panel output has as less as 6V ). Count the charging time with a clock and adjust the charging current from time to time to maintain 0.5A .
