- Q:I know there two brakes. Front and Back. How do you break from 50mph on 5th gear. Please tell me step by step and how to brake and shift the gear when slowing down. which do you use most front or back and do you have to use both.
- Breaking form 5th to first (street) – This will depend on the situation and the type of bike. Because you are new and I will assume you are not on a sport bike here is the basics. 1) Practice coming to stops in a parking lot. Practice it slow and fast with the intent of building muscle memory. That means you should be doing this without thinking about it. 2) At 50 you see the stop light ahead turn red. Pull in the clutch and down shift and let out the clutch. Use the engine to slow down. When the engine is no longer slowing you down fast enough down shift again. Repeat until you are in 1st gear and apply breaks. Your left foot should be out a second or two before you stop. Then just lean to the left and rest the weight on your foot. To stop faster do the same thing but faster. To emergency stop grab the clutch and brakes and forget down shifting. (practice this too) I don’t want to get into it but if you are on a sportbike the rear brake does not need to be used unless you are on a track squaring off corners and I don’t think you will be doing that soon. The rear also helps with low speed (parking lot turns) otherwise I NEVER use it. As for the front brake only techniques I know what you all have been taught in MSF and by all means please do that. I am speaking from a racing and track background on this and it only applies with performance bikes with performance breakes. On a sport bike your front brake is strong enough to raise the rear of the bike in the air; what is the rear brake doing other than causing a highside? Let the rear roll! When you brake into corner hard enough to lift the back off the ground you will know what Im saying.
- Q:I have a 2000 SV650 and need to replace the front and rear brake pads. I need and estimate to see how much it will cost at a shop so that I am not over charged. Thank you.
- I've never seen a fee for a manual at a shop, but around 200-275 sounds about right. The reason being is shop prices are 80-90 bucks per hour. A set of front and rear pads for a SV will cost about 80-100 bucks, and are a pretty easy install. In a shop you'll probably pay for 1-1 1/2 hours of labor, and shop fees, and OEM pads.
- Q:Ok so its a 2000 Kawi zx6r with 2000 miles i live 2 and a half hours from the bike, so going to see it is a lil high on gas i drive a four door ram. Bike has 22k miles on it and its bone stock cept the exhaust. Guy bought it from a bike shop 3 years ago and has done nothing to it. It has never been dropped! But i need to change the oil, get new brake pads, and also get a new gas cap (broke key off in it) hes asking 2200 for it when the kelly blue book is 25-27ish. Is this bike worth it? This is also my first bike and i have all the cash, My gear head friends think its kinda bad deal. Help me out friends please i really really want a motorcycle
- Totally buy it bro. Motorcycles are totally rad, and the ZX6R is for sure a good choice.
- Q:Motorcycles
- The 03 levers will not work on an 09. The piovt pins are different diameter and if the 09 has a clutch safety switch, the 03 clutch lever doesn't have the actuating tab. The pins were changed in 04 on the new rubber-mount engine/chassis and I can't remember what year they started using the clutch safety switch. You will need to get levers made to fit an 09.
- Q:I have a vague understanding that you don‘t need a motorcycle license to drive certain mopeds. What are the standards that a moped has to meet in order to be street legal without a motorcycle license?
- The definitions of moped, scooter and motorcycle, as well as which license is required for each varies from state to state. In my state, a moped is: 259:57 Moped. – Moped'' shall mean a motor-driven cycle whose speed attainable in one mile is 30 miles per hour or less which is equipped with a motor that produces 2 brake horse power or less; if an internal combustion engine is used, the piston displacement shall not exceed 50 cubic centimeters and the power-drive system shall not require the operator to shift gears. Note there is no mention of pedals, which is still a requirement in some places A moped may be operated with an Operator's (auto), Motorcycle, or Moped-Only license.
- Q:I own a 2011 model of Honda Unicorn. After the 5th service i experienced that front disc brakes is not so effective as it used to be. Our service manager suggested me to change our brake pads once every 6000km ours has run about 5935km. Is it true or he is just faking so he could make money out of it. And how much does a brake pad cost in Bangalore?
- I usually just replace the pads when they're worn enough to get close to the rotors, but before they're gone and metal contacts the rotors. This happens at different mileage depending on a lot of factors, but I've never heard of anyone recommending an actual mileage figure. Maybe yours are hard to see and the guy is just giving you a ballpark figure so you'll at least check once in awhile.
- Q:This person has not taken the motorcycle safety course. He just took the DMV test and got a motorcycle and figured it out on his own. He was not taught any of the technical knowledge that is taught in the safety course like apex turns and what to ideally do in regards to the throttle and brake during a curved road. He maintains that since he has never crashed, he is a good rider and does not need the safety course.
- If he can pass the dmv test, then he could pass the ms course, they go over the same things Naturally he wont be a very skilled rider, and go slow around turns and all, but it will bite him at some point. You dont have to know all the details of driving a car right to not get into a crash, but it will happen eventually, likely due to one of the things the driver was unaware of. This guy is clearly a fast learner and is motivated to reach his goals, which is positive, but i would put him at greater risk of a crash due to a lack of skill at one point or another. Could be cocky, but i dont know the guy. Part of riding is still figuring stuff out for your bike, and msf stays in a parking lot in first gear, along with the dmv test. So most people have to figure out the turning and all, but at least they will have heard of things like looking through a turn etc.
- Q:I have a 2000 Honda CBR f4 and need to know what brake fluid to use
- Use either DOT 3 or DOT 4 The brake fluid type is stamped on the master cylinder cap. Do not use DOT 5
