- Q: We are considering getting solar panels for our home just south of Birmingham, AL. We know a little and are trying to educate ourselves the best we can. But we are having a hard time finding anyone around this area. We have done the yellow page thing, and some quot;green places around town. But to no luck.....
- Any electrical contractor could likely install them, and there are several Internet businesses that sell solar panels. You likely have no place there to get the kind of large panels you need for a house. Look at your local regulations. Your utility may not allow grid-tie, so you may have to set up an off-grid system with batteries and use separate wiring or a transfer switch. One thing a lot of people neglect is hail protection. In Birmingham, you're likely to have large hail (larger than golf ball size) every couple of years in the spring. You need to work out a way of covering them in advance of severe weather. Most panels will take up to golf-ball size hail with no problem. DK PS, I've done this myself, and have considerably more information. Email if you're interested.
- Q: So, I've seen cheap solar panel kits for sale from Harbor Freight, and regardless of whether or not I were to buy a set from them or someone else, I was wondering what the process of implementing a small-scale solar system into your household electrical system would be.I've read articles that started out too in-depth or were speaking of systems on a much larger scale. Can it be as easy as buying the panels and inverter, and plugging it into a socket, or is there more to it?Some of the articles I was reading had mentioned having to contract with your electrical supplier, having to have an electrician tie it all in in some special/ necessary way, using a battery pack (would this be necessary for a tied-in system?), or using the system to only power single items, like a water heater, or plugging items into a connected battery-pack, all of which I'm not sure is necessary or needed for what my goals/ means are/ would be.
- Take okorder /... This unit produces 45W for $90. Inverter is extra. Let's say this unit produces that amount of power for a full 2 hours a day, that's 45W * 2h = 540 Wh or 0.54kWh. If I save that from my electrical company, I would pay about 5 cents. $90 then takes 3800 days or 0 years. At that point, you haven't actually made any money, you've simply recovered what you paid out to buy the unit 0 years ago. Yes, electrical power prices will be going up over the long term but the output of this unit is also not going to be 45W over its lifetime (if it even lasts 0 years) so I really question the economics.
- Q: How do solar panels affect insurance premiums?
- Solar panels can potentially lead to a decrease in insurance premiums as they are considered to be a low-risk investment that adds value to a property. However, the exact impact on insurance premiums may vary depending on factors such as location, system size, and the insurance provider's policies.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed in areas with frequent power outages?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed in areas with frequent power outages. In fact, they can be a great solution to overcome the challenges of unreliable power grids. Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, which means they can operate independently of the grid during power outages. By storing excess energy in batteries, solar panels can provide a reliable and uninterrupted power supply, even in areas prone to frequent outages.
- Q: solar panels are way too expensive to buy, can they be homemade cheaply? i want at least 500 watts. everyone on the web sells these instructions, but i'd like a link to free info, if it is really possible for a non-sciencey person to make. thank you
- The idea is to hand assemble scrap solar cells that would otherwise be thrown out. At one point in time, very few people would want to do this so you could get the broken solar cells for free but now they sell them by the watt. It's still cheaper than a pre-fabricated solar panel but it's very labour intensive. Technically it's like wiring a bunch of batteries together, you measure the voltage and current a broken cell produces and decide whether or not to wire it in series or in parallel with other cells to get the performance characteristics that you want plus try to fit them onto some kind of structural panel in a fashion that uses the space efficiently. Since your handiwork is likely to be fragile, you'll probably have to put some plate glass on top to protect the cells from the elements, you can also improve performance by positioning fresnel lenses to increase the amount of light on active elements versus inactive areas of the panel.
- Q: How do solar panels affect the property's energy management strategy?
- Solar panels can significantly impact a property's energy management strategy by providing a renewable and sustainable source of electricity. By harnessing solar energy, the property can reduce its dependence on traditional power sources, lower energy costs, and decrease its carbon footprint. Solar panels can also help to stabilize energy prices, as they generate electricity during peak demand periods, reducing the need to purchase electricity from the grid. Additionally, solar panels can provide a reliable source of backup power during grid outages, enhancing the property's energy resilience. Overall, solar panels offer numerous advantages to a property's energy management strategy, promoting sustainability, cost savings, and energy independence.
- Q: Need solar panel info with dimensions and also the total cost of the whole equipment for setting up of the required solar panels for a 2-story home
- Please excuse my bluntness, but you are not ready to ask these questions. This is a very complex issue. The how many question depends on what you expect of the system. Are you attempting to be off the grid? If so the system will have to supply all of your electrical needs, including those at night. You would need batteries. If you will be on the grid and want to supply all your electrical needs, your system will have to average the total daily usage. This will vary from one season to the next, so you will need to find out your annual usage. If you just want to reduce your electric bill, you need to pick the acceptable installation cost, and work with it to determine what it will buy In your shoes I would do some studying. Check out solar panels in the green search box above, and on the Internet. This will help you ask questions that are easier for us to answer.
- Q: China is building solar panels and have been for years. That is the most abundant energy in the world. My nieghbor has two panels on his roof and he actually sells energy back to the electric company. These panels cost about $30,000. each, because we don't produce them here on that level. If we did, that price would drop drastically. Other alternatives are also available. Drilling for oil will no change anything. Once you give the oil companie the go ahead, the will focus on that and the alternatives won't be developed any farther. We will be right back here in about 0 years. The price will not go down anyway. So why not switch half of our fuel to alternatives?
- Solar voltaic panels are not 30,000 dollars each, a good panel, 24.4Vmp, times 95 watts, is about 900 dollars. Solar electric generation, makes sense, not because of the myth that the energy transmission companies 'buy' the energy you produce in excess (energy companies, zero out the balance at the end of the year, so that it only makes sense to design a system that equals your needs, not exceeds them). Solar electrical generation, is the future of energy freedom, but the powers that be, do not have yours' and my economic freedom in their portfolio. They are actively pursuing the globalization, to push down the working class, to the 'post industrial age', where the working classes, can once again, be relegated to serfdom, while the super rich, drink DOM, and watch us toil in the sun.
- Q: it is just for a simple project, but i am looking for a cheap, low cost, around one to two volts solar panel regulator uld y'all please help?
- Solar cells shouldn't need a voltage regulator for simple projects like driving motors or powering CMOS electronic circuits. I would need to know a little more on your goals for the project to help. However, I will put a few links that may be helpful to solar cells and some voltage regulators. The first link is general solar cell info and includes manufacturer lists at the end. The second is a link to educational solar cell kits and cells that may be useful for you. The last one is Digi-Key which is good for finding components to make your own voltage regulator. Hope this helps with your project!!
- Q: if you know the area of the panel can u calculate for the wattage or voltage of the panel..
- You need to know how many solar cells are in the panel and what is the rated current each cell will produce. This information should be listed on the panel. Each cell will produce from 0.5 to 0.55 volts DC per cell and each cell will produce a current that is dependent on the size of the cell and the type of material the cell is made from. If the cells are connected in series then the voltage of each cell will add together, that is if you have 30 cells connected in series they should generate about 5 to 6.5 volts DC. If each cell generates .2 amps, then you multiply the voltage of 5 volts DC times .2 amps DC equals 8 watts of power. The current of each cell does not add together when you connect the cells in series only the voltage of each cell. If you connect the 30 cells in parallel then the current of each cell adds together but the voltage of each cell does not. That is 0.5 Volts DC times 36 amps equals 8 watts. The power (watts) produced will be the same. See our blog on the products page to see how to connect solar cells in series and in parallel. We also have a PDF file of solar cells and their rated output current sorted by watts per area and their manufacturer.
