Solar Module Introduction
Solar modules use light energy (photons) from the sun to generate electricity through the photovoltaic effect. The majority of modules use wafer-based crystalline silicon cells or thin-film cells based on cadmium telluride or silicon. The structural (load carrying) member of a module can either be the top layer or the back layer. Cells must also be protected from mechanical damage and moisture. Most solar modules are rigid, but semi-flexible ones are available, based on thin-film cells. These early solar modules were first used in space in 1958.
Electrical connections are made in series to achieve a desired output voltage and/or in parallel to provide a desired current capability. The conducting wires that take the current off the modules may contain silver, copper or other non-magnetic conductive transition metals. The cells must be connected electrically to one another and to the rest of the system. Externally, popular terrestrial usage photovoltaic modules use MC3 (older) or MC4 connectors to facilitate easy weatherproof connections to the rest of the system.

- Q: Hello from SO TX.. I would like to know if anyone out there has SOLAR PANELS on their home?I have a 850 sq ft. house. I called Austin to a company that offers panels and installation. The cost $8,000.00, for 0 panels . The rep said we would save about 2 to 25% on our electric bill /mo. We use approximately 980 kw/mo. Our bill is around $40.00 / mo...I really don't think that's a good enough savings. We figure it would take 25 years to recoup our investment. And where we live in TX it does not offer any incentives. The gov. allows you a $2000.00 tx break.
- $8,000 invested at 5% interest would pay you $900 per year for the rest of your life. If you spend $40 per month and would save 25% of that, you would save $420 per year. To be fair, the savings would creep up with the electric rates but this would be off-set by maintenance cost and equipment attrition.
- Q: I want to buy a solar panel kit but I'm unsure of how it works. Basically I want to run my entainment set, Xbox, cable box, 46 led tv, and some desktop speakers. I went online and found a kit for like 250 or something like that at homedepot and was wondering if that kit is worth the money or go bigger or something.
- Well, you'll want to find the wattage your devices use. Then you'll want to be able to supply that with your solar cells. Plus a fair margin for emergencies. Most of them should have their expected wattage printed on them, but you could also get a meter to measure it. Beyond that, you will want an inverter, and some batteries.
- Q: How does the snow cover get removed from the panels?
- Green energy magically makes the snow transparent. The more I learn about solar and wind, particularly selling excess power back to the utility, the less sense it makes. You'll have noticed, perhaps, that there was no way to store the power from the panels for when it's really needed.
- Q: This is the cenario. Your yearly energy use comes by mail and it states that the total amount of energy used your household is 7000kWh.Then you make the decision of switching to get solar panels. The question is what area should your solar panel be given that the average annual length of daylight is 2.0.
- It is not that simple. There are 3 main types of solar cells. Monocrystalline silicon is the most efficient and produces the smallest solar cells, and therefore the smallest panels. Poly-crystalline (or multi-crystalline) silicon produces the next most efficient type of cells and are a popular choice. Amorphous (or thin-film) silicon uses the least amount of silicon and also produces the least efficient solar cells. This means thin film system take up more area than the other two; an important factor to consider in relation to possible future upgrades; i.e. if you'll have enough space left to do so. The North (in the Southern hemisphere) or South (in the Northern hemisphere) facing roof collects the most energy. So this biases the roof area required. Your energy usage can be changed. Hot water (a major energy user) could be better using direct solar heating with peak demand boosting, either from mains or solar. There are other possibilities, either to reduce demand or to provide energy from other sources. Not all sunshine hours are equal. Hours around midday are far more productive than hours later in the day. This must be factored in.
- Q: im making an energy efficiant house for science class and i need to price the house. im putting solar pannels on the roof and would u please tell me how much they are per like 2 sq. feet of a pannel?
- It is tough to answer that question since efficiency is something u pay for thus the price can varies greatly but here is a few web sites you could check out and most would probably be happy to help with any info if you contacted them and the last one has allot of other info that could help like handling waste and water usage in this home
- Q: i want to build a stationary model of a solar panel and i dont know if it is going to be too simple or not i also want ideas to make it betterplease criticism is allowedmy idea was to make a case, just like a real solar panel, and take plexiglass to make it. i want to add some models of photovoltaic cells that look like they are in a solar panel . i want to add the fake shoulderings as well . i want to make the case openable by hinges.i would like some of your thoughts and ideas to help me .thx

- Q: I am interested in solar energy, but am not sure how eficiant it would be in the northwest? Any comments would be apriciated.
- Are solar panels a good thing to do for the environment? - Yes. Can you recoup the cost your investment in the solar cells/panels in any reasonable amount of time in Seattle? - most likely - not. I know it's been a miserable spring in Seattle, but, I think we got 3 sunny days last month. With the number of cloudy/rainy days here, solar will only really benefit you in June, July, August and September. There are two kinds of solar panels - electric or water based. The electrics - photovoltaics - are costly to purchase and it's difficult to store the electricity once you make it. A water heater type solar panel initially cost less and can provide some benefit even on partly cloudy days. I have even seen instructions on how to build your own (if you are frugal and handy) I just do not think it's worthwhile in Seattle - if it was Denver or Phoenix we were talking about - then it would be a different story.
- Q: Can solar panels increase the value of my property?
- Yes, solar panels can increase the value of your property. Studies have shown that properties equipped with solar panels have higher resale values compared to those without. Solar panels offer energy savings, environmental benefits, and potential tax incentives, making them an attractive feature for potential buyers. Additionally, as renewable energy becomes increasingly popular, properties with solar panels are likely to be in higher demand, further boosting their value.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on a pole or ground mount?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on both poles and ground mounts. Pole-mounted solar panels are typically used in situations where there is limited space or when the panels need to be elevated for better sunlight exposure. Ground-mounted solar panels are commonly used in larger installations or when there is ample available land. Both options offer flexibility in placement and can effectively harness solar energy.
- Q: In nature, green leaves collect light and produce energy. Is this what they copied to make solar panels? If not how hard would it be to make artificial leaves that would power our homes?
- No, although they both use the capture of energy from electrons excited to a higher state by sunlight, plants use enzymes (mostly chlorophyll) packed in chloroplasts; solar panels still largely use silicon. There are some companies exploring the use of a plant enzyme-based process since it's so much more efficient. The farthest they've gotten is using organic nanocrystal pigments instead of silicon crystals.
