- Q: I have extremely hard water, and my water softener has been broken for a few years. There's been quite a decrease in water pressure. I'm assuming this is from hard water deposits in the pipes.Is there anything that can be done about it? Can they be flushed out?If so, do you have any idea of what the cost might be? I'm sure it wouldn't be cheap.
- Sweating (soldering) pipe is tricky even at the best of times and even when done by an expert. a) Solder can go bad - but it is obviously so, crumbly and so forth. If he was using shiny plumber's solder that came off the spool normally, it was fine. b) Proper fluxing an cleanliness is the key to good solder joints. If the pipe was not cleaned properly, or if he did not use the correct flux, the process will be an exercise in frustration. My guess is that he may have been using either lead-free solder with old flux, or old lead-based solder with in incompatible flux, or no flux at all. He may also have been using a torch that was burning improperly letting carbon build up on the areas to be soldered, or an old tank of propane that was not allowing the torch to heat properly. 1. Clean the pipes and fittings either with a fitting cleaner, sand-paper, medium steel wool or other method that leaves a bright, shiny contact-surface. 2. Obtain the correct flux and use it liberally on the fitting and the pipe end. 3. Use a good torch with fresh propane - or a Presto-Lite and acetylene - but one that gives a clear, blue flame when in use. 4. Heat the fitting and pipe, not the solder. Work from the fitting to the pipe as you want to draw the solder into the fitting. Move the torch around the fitting occasionally running onto the pipe a bit. 5. Touch the solder to the fitting on the other side from the flame. When you observe the bead form on the fitting all around - STOP THERE. 6. Wipe the completed joint with a cold, wet rag saturated with clean water. This removes the excess flux and sets the fitting. Good luck with it.
- Q: Has anybody any problems with their Iridium shields flaking? It seems that the mirrored finish and color are starting to flake off around the bottom edge and the tab you use to flip the shield up with. Ive only had the shield for a few months and have only been really caught in the rain once. I use the Motosport Cleaner and Polish to clean it. Any ideas would be most welcome. Thanks
- 1. First a thick, soft, clear plastic layer. This layer comprises the majority of the CD's thickness and weight. It serves two purposes. First, it protects the data layer from damage on the play side and Secondly it acts as a lens to focus the CD player's laser onto the data layer so it can more easily read the data (much the way lenses in spectacles help eyes focus on the words on a page). 2. Next the data layer is where the music and any other information are stored. It's the layer that the CD player reads in order to create the music, graphics, etc. The data layer is molded or pressed into the top of the clear plastic layer. The data in the data layer is arranged in tracks that spiral like the grooves on a vinyl record (except CDs are read from the inside out, the opposite of vinyl records). 3. Now a reflective, metallic layer is located on top of the data layer. It allows the disc to function like a mirror, reflecting the CD player's laser back to the detector in the CD player after it reads the data layer It's this layer that gives the CD's play side a shiny appearance. 4. A thin, hard protective layer is an ultra-thin plastic coating that is added to provide some protection for the reflective and data layers, while also forming a surface upon which the label information can be printed. 5. Finally the label layer is printed on top of the protective layer. It contains the title, graphics, band and other information to identify the contents of the disc. (label side).

- I would invest in a quality chest peace first. It’s the most important protector you can ware next to an athletic cup. For leg protection ware layers for now and upgrade as you can in time. A neck protector is a good idea also. Knee pads can be purchased at hardware stores. They are not as good as the paintball specific pads but they’ll do for now. If you can come up with a bit more, good slider pants are nearly a must if you’re a serious speedballer. But not as needed for woodsball. - I am a fairly good 'home-defense' plumber and have redone both the supply and drain plumbing in two bathrooms in our present house - all code-compliant and properly inspected. The supply-side, using Pex shark-fittings from a good copper riser took me about 4 hours to do to have it make sense and getting valves where they should be and with good access. The drain side, using a hubless fitting to a good main riser then transitioning to PVC took an additional 4 hours, not including access, repair and clean-up. My plumber would have charged me $1,500 for the lot + supplies (he provided the inspection and checked my work) but I still would have had to do the repairs and clean-up. Given that I paid just over $300 for the supplies (shark fittings are not cheap), and with his mark-up, I am guessing about $2,000 would have covered that work. After access (most of the real work) the actual plumbing was remarkably simple and all with plenty of good clearance. The only tricky part was using the chain-breaker to insert the new Y-fitting into the main riser. Your mileage may vary.
