- Q: Why would someone use a solar panel? Does it have to do with the economy right now, global warming, or what?
- I doubt the immediate economy has much to do with it. Solar panels require long-term investment, so in hard times, someone having trouble making ends meet is not going to be buying solar panels, when they could be buying food. It's like if someone has a gas guzzler, if they get laid off, they're not going to spend their savings on a new, fuel efficient car, even if it saves money in the long term. However, it's generally the more wealthy that install solar, and they're not impacted as much by a slow economy. Human nature being what it is, I doubt many people install solar to save the planet. There will be some, but I suspect most are interested in the long-term financial savings. I'm kind of unusual, in that our panels are break-even financially at best. The main reason I put them up was for the fun of learning and doing it.

- Are you thinking of installing electric solar panels or thermal solar panels or both? It would be better to install electric solar panels for electric heating. You can run 7 heaters as long as you do the calculations for the number of panels need for the daylight hours, and the required battery bank to supply the required power.

- If you mean a LASER pointer, then the answer is YES. However, the light is concentrated on a very tiny spot, so the panel will NOT generate much. Laser pointers are rated in milliwatts. A typical red laser pointer is rated at maybe 3 milliwatts. So, that is all that will be transferred at MOST. You don't get something for nothing, so the panel MAY put out 3 milliwatts from the laser pointer, but probably less since the solar panel is not 00% efficient. Solar electrical panels rely on sunlight over a large area measured in terms of many square FEET of area. As for driving lamps, the lamps do not care where the power comes from, only that the voltage and current are correct. Most bulbs will work equally well on AC or DC. Solar panels are used to charge batteries, and the batteries are used with an inverter to supply 0 VAC to things like appliances. What you CAN do is use a laser pointer to turn off a photoelectrically controlled light, such as a streetlight, maybe. Many streetlights have a photocell on top which looks at the sky and turns on the light when it is near dark until shortly after dawn. If you can shine a laser on the dome of the photocell, it MAY be bright enough to fool the photocell into thinking it is daylight and turn the streetlight off for a while...
- Q: I have a small marine solar panel on my boat It came with the boat. I want to make sure it is working before I connect it. With a volt meter It is only reading .2 volts dc. I would think it should be 2-5 volts?
- Mark, the 2 vdc is pretty typical. Most panels for home use are set up to charge 2 volt batteries, and they are wired for an, open circuit voltage of 8 to 9 volts. This allows it to have enough voltage to feed through a few diodes, perhaps a charge controller and 30 or 40 feet of wire and still have at least 5 volts left over. Once you connect it to the battery the panel will drop to whatever the batteries charging curve voltage would be. If you have a few minutes, I would suggest getting a book at the library called, The Complete Battery Book, by Richard Perez. Just read the chapters pertaining to lead acid batteries, the other discussions on lithium, ni cads and such won't apply to your boat system. If your panel is not large, and it's short circuit current rating in amps is less than 2% of the amp hour capacity of the battery, you can even run the panel without a charge controller. The book explains this as well. There is a great magazine that gets into the nuts and bolts of this stuff, it's called Home Power, you can find it online. You might also find some info at a couple renewable energy websites, I will list them below. Panels are rated in two ways, open circuit voltage, which you measure with a multimeter while the panel is in open sun and nothing is connected to it. The other rating is short cirucuit current, which you measure with an ammeter while the panel is in the sun as well. You connect the ammeter across the output of the panel and let all the power short right through the meter, so you'll need an ammeter big enough to handle more amps than the panel puts out. A 0 amp unit will work for your boat panel. These tests won't hurt the panel, or the meters, we do it all the time in the field, and the manufacturers will tell you to do the same test if you have a problem with a panel and they want to know if it's malfunctioning. - If you are grid-tied, then a standard solar electric system will always feed back into the grid if you are not utilizing more power in your home than is being generated by the solar panels and inverter system. It is possible that a grid isolation device designed to prevent direct back feeding is available, but haven't heard of one in common use. New laws in most areas of the US are now mandating that utilities allow grid-tied alternative energy systems. Double-check you local laws. Sometimes you can't take the utilities word for truth--most will automatically say 'no' and will only relent when you show up with the law in hand. Unfortunately, some utilities have figured out another way to shut down alternative energy pioneers--they demand multimillion dollar insurance policies covering damage that their equipment could sustain from your little PV system. Technically, they are still in compliance with the law, they just make it impossible for a homeowner to meet their requirements. If you are getting the runaround, go to your state representative for help. It's amazing how contrite those utility people can be when a state senator (or even US Senator) has just sent a letter asking them why they are stonewalling a law-abiding and well-meaning citizen. - Yes, solar panels could change the world if they were especially cheap--but they're not and may not be cheap for many years, if ever. Lots of new technology could change the world but most of it doesn't. The government doesn't have a very good track record of picking winners in the new technology markets; that's something we should probably leave to the venture capitalists to do--with their own money. The money the government spent on solar panels is gone. Racked up as debt that we'll leave to our children and grandchildren to pay off.

- Yes. Basically, here's what you need (I'm keeping this general on purpose): The panels themselves -- how large an area depends on average power consumption and how much power you can get on average. That, in turn , depends on climate. You'd need more in Seattle than Tuscon, for example. I'd guess something in the neighborhod of 0 square feet. Depends also on haow many gadgets (printers, etc.) you have. You'll need a power storage system. Lithium gives you the best poser density (of off-the-shelf stuff) but an ordinary car battery works well and is reliable. And, of course, a control system to manage the power generation/storage/use so everything works together without that annoying smell that tells you you just cooked a few hundred bucks worth of equuipment! :)
