Q: The Physics club in our school is trying to convince the Board of Ed to install solar panels in our school, and i was just wondering if anyone with some experience or real expertise in solar energy. I need some points about their usefulness some real pros and cons on maintenance, etc. Anything will help. Personally i would be perfectly for the idea, but i heard that the overall cost of installing them is much higher than the cost of the energy saved and government subsidies, but ive only heard about this.
You have to approach it as an investment. Ignoring the cost of an inverter for net metering, if we consider a 500 W panel installed for $0 a watt which is $5,000 and consider an average of 8 hours of usable sunlight per day, and at a rate of $0.0 per kWh (schools probably get $0.03 per kWh) then the panel would be saving $2.7 per month in electricity. Considering that the panel has an expected lifespan of 20 years, that would give you an internal rate of return such that the monthly rate satisfies the equation: $5,000 = $2.7 * ( ( - / R^24 ) / ( - / R ) - ) By binary method we get R = 0.99588342. Taking this to the 2th power to annualize it we get Ra = 0.9570 which means that we are getting an annual return of -4.83% per annum so investing in the solar panel is the same as making an investment at an interest rate of -4.83% per year. True interest rates are low and you only get about .3% per annum by putting money in a CD but that still beats investing in solar panels which gives you a negative return on your money. Solar panels need to get a lot better before they are a good investment.
Q: How do solar panels affect the power grid?
Solar panels can have both positive and negative impacts on the power grid. On the positive side, solar panels generate clean and renewable energy, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. They can also help to decentralize the power grid by producing electricity closer to where it is consumed, reducing transmission losses. However, the intermittent nature of solar power can pose challenges to grid stability and reliability, as energy generation fluctuates with weather conditions. Additionally, the excess electricity generated by solar panels at certain times can strain the grid if not properly managed. Overall, while solar panels offer significant environmental benefits, their integration into the power grid requires careful planning and management.
Q: What is the average payback period for solar panels?
The average payback period for solar panels is typically around 7 to 10 years. However, this can vary depending on factors such as location, system size, local energy rates, and available incentives.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on billboards?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on billboards.
Q: Can solar panels be used to heat water?
Yes, solar panels can be used to heat water. Solar thermal systems, also known as solar water heaters, use sunlight to heat water and are more efficient at heating water compared to using solar panels for electricity generation. These systems capture the sun's energy and transfer it to a fluid, which then heats the water for various applications such as domestic use, swimming pools, and commercial purposes.
Q: The ancients used skylights for light in lieu of electricity. Light was used for drying, even cooking foods and drying clothes. Solar clocks/sun dials were once popular but now we have battery operated clocks. Where have we tapped into any of these resources since the outdated solar clothes drier nicknamed the 'clothes line'?
Have you seen the industrial solar power tower they built in Spain? It has a very large collection of mirrors which direct sunlight toward a single point at the top of a large tower. There a boiler turbine generates a lot of electricity! It is a genius concept that could easily be installed in North American deserts.
Q: Can I add reflectors or mirrors around the solar panels to increase the power they generate?
In the 70's when silicon was really expensive, they played with using fresnel lenses to focus the sunlight on small solar cells but these panels had to be on heliostats and aimed directly at the Sun. These days, with nano-technology, there's a renewed interest in the concept but the fundamental weakness is that there are diminishing returns, at some point, it's just less expensive to have more solar cells.
Q: Is this a good kit for building a solar panel?

Q: Can solar panels be used for irrigation systems?
Yes, solar panels can be used for irrigation systems. Solar panels can generate electricity which can power the pumps and other components of an irrigation system, reducing the reliance on traditional power sources and making it a more sustainable and cost-effective solution.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on a pergola or awning?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on a pergola or awning. In fact, these structures can provide an ideal platform for solar panel installation, as they offer ample space and exposure to sunlight. Additionally, installing solar panels on a pergola or awning can help to maximize energy production while also providing shade and protection from the elements.
