- Q:I want to build a small soundproof glass room in my living room, since i have another family member moving in and it will be hard to talk over the phone at night and listen to music, since I already share my room. I picture it as big as a phone booth but just longer some how so I can lay in it and just talk on the phone or use my laptop. - Using plaster would be better than clay. Fired ceramic clay would also be fine, but that gets fairly complicated. If you use plaster it will be fairly easy, but you have to build a frame for your ant farm out of wood or use a suitably sized plastic or strong cardboard box. You could take a plastic box, put one plane of glass down. Use modeling clay to make the chambers for your ant farm. Make sure you connect them. Then mix plaster and cover everything so high you can still see your chambers. Put second pane of glass on it. After plaster has set, you should be able to remove one pane of glass, get out the modeling clay, then put the pane back on, you can use small clamps if necessary. Plaster is pretty good for an ant farm since it soaks up water. You don't want an ant farm to be absolutely dry, that isn't good for the ants. They need a certain humidity. Of course you don't want it really wet either, you'll have to observe the ants to see what they prefer. You can water the ant farm periodically or put one side into water so it soaks up some water. You also have to move the ants to a new ant farm once in a while, since the ant farm will become dirty. Make sure you feed the ants proteins and not just sugar. Make sure you have an ant queen. A good way to start an ant farm is to collect a queen if you see one outside. Since ants swarm, that is a good time to find a lot of queens. Make sure the queen doesn't have wings any more, only then she is mated.
- Q:I have a chinese water dragon. He is still a baby but I'm looking to build him a bigger cage as he will grow to possibly three feet in length. I've searched the net for ideas on his cage and I'd like to use glass or plexi-glass on the sides and front of the cage. - You will need Kiln brick and kiln brick mortar, you will need a gas burner with jets, a gas hook up, the bricks will have to have a suitable size hole in them to insert blown glass (whatever size you work with), a plug of some size, and a pot large enough for the glass mix, with high enough melt temp that glass will melt at a considerably lower temp...glass can be fluxed to melt at , say cone 04 or so, therefore the oven must withstand cone 10 for safety. This is an intensive project to undertake! You may want to take some courses in glass and glass blowing at a college before deciding to jump into this...for it will be very expensive for the tools (tungsten) the kiln parts (even the kiln brick is very expensive, and is very delicate...then the cost of running a gas line, etc! You do NOT want to set this up in a house without a serious hood that vents to the outside. CO emissions from open flame gas burners can be very dangerous. Happy holidays and good luck
