- Q: I have a shed that has wiring run for light bulb and a couple outlets. It is in a dark corner of my yard and at night is kinda creepy to go in with even a flashlight. I am weighing the option/expense of running electricity from the house on an overhead line versus putting up a 45 watt solar panel on the metal roof with inverter, battery etc. Sunlight is good to excellent at the location. Question is - will this be sufficient for the occasional use of light and an outlet? What can I expect? Pros and cons appreciated
- Lets say, for a simple approximation, that the 45 watt panel produces 45 watts /3 of the time and nothing the rest of the time. Each day, this will produce 8 hours times 45 watts = 360 watt hours. Also assume the battery charge controller and inverter waste half of that power, leaving 80 watt hours per day. If you use compact fluorescent lamps, that would allow you to burn 80 watts worth for an hour every day, or 90 watts for 2 hours, etc. That is a lot of light for a shed. You might consider using much less efficient tungsten filament lamps, but eliminate the inverter and choose low voltage (automotive) lamps that can run directly across the battery and lower the total cost, but give you only about half the light times time. The main advantage of the inverter might be that it would allow you to use small power tools or appliances in the shed. -- Regards, John Popelish

- In the practical sense, the differences are trivial. I'd buy on price per watt, unless space is at a premium (it isn't for most installations).

- Q: Ok so i have to solar panels to charge a battery however the panels hooked up in series does charge the battery very slowly because series connections only multiplies the voltage but leaves the current the same. Is there a way i can also hook both of them up in parallel at the same time to multiply the current for faster charge? I know i can do this with 4 panels but i dont want to spend extra. So is there a way to hook up 2 solar panels in series and parallel at the same time? Thanks in advace

- I am afraid you are in for some disapointment. A typical solar panel might put out something over 00 watts, and cost a pretty big bundle. Then, what would you do with the power? It will be low voltage DC. You could charge a battery, or run a DC appliance. You would get less than ten cents worth of electricity per day. If you wanted to use it for household appliances, you would need an inverter. More big bucks. Type solar panels in the green search box at the top of this page, and read previous Q A. Also do the same on the Internet. Sorry to be a wet blanket.

- Build from scratch, sorry your way over your head. (mine too). There are lots of companies that will give quotes on doing what your looking for, but plan on spending 20 to 50K depending on where you live and what you need. I don't know about where you are, but My hydro bill is almost half delivery charges. Therefore I could cut back by 99% on the usage, and still only have my bill come down by less than 50%. I understand you desire to lower costs, but unless you do a big change(lots of outlay) your savings will be small. By all means shut off lights your not useing etc. there are other ways of lowering your household bills better way is solar heating. But this also depends on where you live. - Rooftop solar panels might cause all sorts of maintenance or poor installation problems but I rather doubt at this point if we can say that there is an issue with solar panels in general that will cause a problem with the roof. Rather solar panels tend to shade a roof on its most exposed side. Without solar panels southern facing roofs will wear out faster than northern facing roofs. Installed solar panels will tend to make the roof last longer.
