- Yes, I did it a few days ago. I had an blackberry but a few months later, I broked it and didn't want to upgrade it because I would have to make a new contract so I went to Walkmart, buyed a new t-mobile phone ( It was cheaper, $25.00) and then just switched the sim card to the new phone. - mobile phone numbers are highly govt protected so there probably isn't a search to find out the owner of the cell like there is a way to find the owner of a land line. plus, there are so many people who have cell phones but they are in other people's name, ie: their parents, siblings, etc. the best way: call and ask
