I have a commercial building I maintain on a regular basis, with dozens of metal clad fire doors, and I use a fine,Tight cell) foam, roller cover. It will offer the smoothest finish, and I just use an interior SATIN Latex paint. Certainly you can use a Semi Gloss, or if the doorway is trimmed, use the same as the trim paint formulation.
