You don't say what you want it for, but if you are studying the chemistry of iron then you might want to be a little careful of the source of the metal. You can buy small pieces of pure iron from chemical supply companies like Alfa. If you need small pieces of iron for structural applications, the simplest thing is to order it from someplace like McMaster-Carr.

Q: It was wrinkled when I took it out of the package. Is it safe to iron it at least for the first time? It‘s 100% cotton, but I don‘t want to ruin a $45 shirt so I thought I better check first.: Instead, hang it in the bathroom then run a hot bath or take a hot shower and hang it in the humid room. That should get rid of the worst of the wrinking without ironing. edit: kim beat me to it :)
