- Q: I am borderline anemic. I‘m a 19 year old female. I take 18 mg of iron daily, which is more than the RDA, so obviously something is inhibiting the iron absorption. I eat a lot of whole wheat products, sweet potatoes, white meat, and occasionally green beans or lettuce. I drink water, fruit juice, and soda. Can anyone tell me if anything I eat or drink is inhibiting my iron absorption? Also, what helps improve iron absorption? I know Vitamin C is one thing helps improve iron absorption, and I used to drink orange juice for that, but I can‘t anymore due to acid reflux. What else is a good source of Vitamin C?
- If you eat a lot of calcium at the same time you take your iron, it will prevent the iron from being absorbed very well. Eating food rich in vitamin C will help the absoption. Strawberries, and other fruit are good sources of vitamin C. Also, iron is best absorbed by eating foods rich in iron instead of by a pill. So, eat the iron-rich foods with the vit C foods together. At another meal you can have the calcium-rich foods.

- Has your Dr. expressed any concern about it? To the best of my knowledge there isn't anything you can eat that will reduce the iron concentration. There are drugs that can be used to lower the iron content but the easiest way the one least likely to cause any complications is phlebotomy. Phlebotomy is essentially the draining of a pint of blood (usually every other week) and then disposing of it as medical waste. You need a Dr.'s order for it. Before you are entered into a course of phlebotomy the Dr. will probably want to check for hemachromatosis which is a hereditary problem where too much iron is retained in your blood. Another test for liver function may also be ordered. Phlebotomy is usually the responsibility of the senior lab specimens nurse, lots of experience drawing blood. I really didn't even notice the needle insertion when I went through it it takes about half an hour for the pint, Best of luck.

You don't want your baby to lack oxygen, and your blood is how it breathes so to speak. I found that for me it was better on my system to eat more natural sources of iron than to take the pills. Anything green and leafy has it, as well as raisons, and prunes. A wonderful more tasty thing I found is that Frosted Mini Wheats have 90% of your daily iron needs in one bowl. So if you get two bowls a day, or one bowl and a salad later in the day, you should be fine. Now that my baby is born, my blood evened out and I am no longer anemic. But I remember how annoying it was. When you get enough iron, you just feel so much more awake and ready to go. But too much and you'll be constipated.
