Q: I'm looking at solar panels and I have NO IDEA what this stuff means.They come in catagories of Watts. What does that refer to? If a solar pannel is in the 200-watt catagory, what does that really mean? Will it produce 200 watts an hour, a day, a week, a month, a year?? Q: Ok, so I've been having much success with the joule thief circuit and a LED, but i tried hooking it up to a small solar panel that can put out 2.5v on it's own, and can light up a white LED dimly by it self to the joule thief and it will not work ....my question is why? I already trouble shooted it, the circuit is not the problem, is it the amount of amps the small solar panel is capable of? not enough?
Solar panels convert light energy to electrical energy with an efficiency of around 5%. A SMALL solar panel will only produce a small amount of power (watts) your joule thief circuit wont help because as you draw more current from the solar panel the voltage will drop; and your joule thief circuit just reduces the efficiency of the whole system Try adding another solar cell in series to get more voltage and more power.
Q: So how does a solar panel work? Where does the energy get stored in? How much does one cost for a small 2 family home? How much money would we save on electricity?
In the short, a solar panel is composed of many solar cells...all tied together and in some sort of a frame for mounting. When energy from the sun hits it, it creates a reaction which can feed electricity through leads to a converter system which takes the Direct Current power and converts it into Alternating Current. If you rewire your house for DC products I suppoes you wo'nt need the converter. but most of these systems are retro-fits. Batteries provide back up source to the system when the sun goes down. So solar is converted to electricity through the panel, which goes to your solar system which both provides power to the house and to recharge batteries. The batteries take over when the sun is down. So you will need to know how much battery capacity you need by calculating the Amp hour rating of your applicances that you normally use at night like Microwave, TV, radio, refrigerator, etc. For some depending on the appliance....water heater (if electric) or stove) then you need to figure out how many panels you need to provide your normal daily energy use, figure out how many batteries you need, set up a distribution system that gives you what you need where you want it and wa la. Once done, you will be off the grid and paying nothing from the electrical utility. Some places due to deregulations allow you to sell excess power to local utilities too, but those systems need to meet tight standards.

I don't know how they calculate out the savings, but ask your local supplier. The expensive part of heating hot water is the initial starting of the warming of the cold water, but this is where solar panels come to play a very good role in preheating home hot water cylinders. Sometimes the water coming from the solar panels is hotter than what the hot-water cylinder thermostat is set for this is one way you save money Another equally expense of heating hot-water is when the element thermostat keeps the temperature up to the desired setting of the thermostat. Where as having a solar panel or two the hot water cylinder is only a storage container to store the hot water in! A great invention in my book! The initial costs are buying these units having them installed, but over time you will start saving money on your heating hot water costs, where you will be able to waste a bit of hot water and not worry about the costs going to waste or down the drain... I suppose you know all of this, but I'm sorry, I can't convert your conversion question, best ask the supplier to put everything in layman's terms so you can understand it better more clearly! I wouldn't worry about what the solar panel is going to do to the surrounding environment, I would worry about what the surounding environment is going to do to the solar panels.

Q: Can I use a regulator from a car to regulate the voltage from a solar panel to a battery?
solar panels will naturally produce a certain DC voltage which is what your battery needs - the current will vary based on the sun light. You need probably 4V to have some over voltage. So based on your specs look at having at least 4 V but not too much over that (tells you how many panels you need in series) I would have blocking diodes (probably the solar cell has them built in) to insure the battery does not discharge thru the panel.
