If you get a systemt to put out 000 watts, it's going to be more than you need, and you'll waste your money. 20 amps is 2200 watts (assuming a 0 volt circuit), which is even more. That will be very pricey. Get the kill-a-watt so that you don't spend more than you need to on solar panels. The cost of the kill-a-watt is almost nothing compared to what you'll be spending on the panels. If I had to guess, 500 watts would run all those devices at the same time.

Any comments would be apriciated.: The solar rating of your area is Good so I wouldnt see the reason not to use it. In my area solar rating is very good I get all evergy from it plus even selling it. Q: About how much would it cost to purchase and install solar panels for the average American house so that the house can be off the power grid and use the same amount of electricity as it normally does?: My friend has a system with 6 Panels, I think about 6 large batteries (Like Golf Cart Battery), a 5 KW Generator. It also has all the electronic controllers and monitors. He has about $30,000-$35,000 in his system. It does pretty good except it will not support air conditioning or heat without running the generator which is expensive. He has some niehbors that have air conditiong, but they use a gas / ammonia cycle for that. Caution, even with these systems they must be very careful with power usage, or they must run generators. They are located in the Sonoran desert where the sun shines just about every day so it is the very best of conditions. Based on this, I would say a system that would match the average household usage would cost around $80,000 or more, and would need a huge roof or large open area facing south. Probably not practicle, but possible.

Q: Here's a little idea I though might help everyone out in Iraq a little: How about if the US mass produces solar panels that are small enough to carry (maybe one foot by three feet) that have a regular power outlet on them to the Iraqis? We could send convoys to the people waiting in line to buy gas and give each person one free solar panel. Why?. A lot of people are buying gas to run generators for air conditioning, not to fuel vehicles. 2. It would help reduce the gas lines if people only needed gas for cars instead of their generators too.3. It would help reduce the fighting over the power grid if people didn't need the grid for their own electrical power.My theory is, once every family in Iraq has enough of these panels that they don't even care about the power grid (during the daytime anyway) it would be much easier to fix the power grid. One square meter will have kW power from sun's radiation. For current technology, the conversion efficiency is about 8%. So one foot by three foot of solar panel only produce 80Watt. There are kits available where you can make and install your own solar panel and wind turbine but is it bull **** or is it a good deal?: If you're in Hawaii, number one, be sure to get a solar water heater. Guaranteed fast payback. Now about those kits. Avoid the kind that says you can make your own panels for under $200. Those are scams. If you're in CC of Honolulu, you will not be allowed to connect that kind of panel to your house - it doesn't meet National Electrical Code because it doesn't have a safety rating like UL. There are kits for grid-tied solar that run from $6000 on up. That's the kind that can actually save you money. I don't know whether you are allowed to install it yourself, though. In California, you can, as long as you get the inspection, same as any other building project. In spite of being further south, Honolulu gets about the same amount of sun as we do in San Jose, California. That's because our area is dry, and you have more clouds and rain during an average year. If you're in one of the wet valleys like Manoa or Palolo, obviously the situation would only be worse. But your electric rates are high, so you have a good chance of making your money back. Very few sites are really good for wind turbines. You cannot just put it on your roof in the city - it needs to up high, where the wind is strong and steady. That's why you see turbine mounted on towers. Also, because it has moving parts, it's going to wear out. Finally, you know how cars rust out quickly there compared to the mainland? Same thing with a wind turbine.
