Q: when you have a pile of all kinds of dishes and a small kitchen and counters and no dish washer?: Rinse all of the dishes out first. Start with the cleaner things first (so save your greasy lasagna for last). If your sink is separated, pile the clean dishes on that side. When you are finished washing, rinse all of the dishes together (this saves water and money). If you don't have a separated sink, just rinse them as you go. I hope this helps!

In England I always washed dishes by hand. Now, in the US, I am curious to know how wasteful this noisy machine actually is!: Yes and how a person washes has an effect on the amount of energy used. I'm very effecient at handwashing and I'm pretty sure I use less water and energy than my dishwasher. But many people use much more in the way they wash. Another thing to think about is what products you're using. Most of the diswasher products are very bad for the environment. Either way, you should use biodegradables. BTW: I also use the water normally wasted waiting for it to heat by catching it in pitchers to fill my Brita pitcher.

Q: i have a pair. they aren't the ALL black pair, but the ones with the black canvas. i want to wash them but dont want to ruin them.: hand wash them in a basin but don't use bleach...just soapy water and then fill them with scrunched up newspaper and hang them out on the line or clothes airer.

Most hardware stores should carry them. We used to put a nylon stocking on the end of the drain pipe to catch the lint that would plug the drain. Hope this helps.

But before you use it, clean the seams where you are going to use it so you won't seal in mold or bacteria. Use something with bleach in it to clean. Try not to get the silicone on your clothes...it doesn't come out. I hope this was helpful.
