Description of tempered glass

Tempered glass is a type of glass with evenly distributed compressive stresses on the surface which is made by heating float glass to nearly softening point and then cooling it down rapidly by air. During the instant cooling process, the glass exterior is solidified due to rapid cooling while the interior of glass is cooled down relatively slowly. This process will improve the glass exterior compressive stress and interior tensile stress resistance which can improve the overall mechanical strength of glass by gemination and result in good thermal stability.

Q: can i build a tank 2000x500x400mm with braces with 5mm thick glass?: I just checked my commercially made tank. It's 1200x 500 x 400 and build from 6mm glass. The extra length will be OK as long as it's braced properly. My tank has internal "Euro" bracing and a tie brace from front to back The bottom glass is 8mm I think 5mm would be cutting things a bit too fine. Ian
