Q: Ok Im trying to power my room using solar panels and I've figure out that I need about 700 watts to do so, but I really only use my electronics at night. I was wondering if I could buy lets say a 200 watt solar panel and let it charge a battery all day would that work? I live in southern california so I dont have to worry to much about cloudy days. also any suggestions on where to buy a panel, inverter, charge regulator, and battery?
You would probably need several batteries. 700 watts means about 40 Amps from a 2 volt battery. That is a lot of current. You need to loot at how may watt-hours you need. And how many amp-hours for the batteries.
Q: Can solar panels be used on boats or RVs?
Yes, solar panels can be successfully used on boats or RVs. In fact, they are increasingly popular for these applications due to their ability to generate clean and renewable energy while on the move. Solar panels can provide power to charge batteries and run various onboard devices, making them an excellent choice for boating and RV enthusiasts seeking energy independence and sustainability.
Q: The average solar panel produces 0% of the energy that is put into it. What is happening to the other 90%? Is it being reflected or is it being obsorbed by materials that are not a part of the solar cell? Is it possible to one day have near 00% efficient solar cell technology?
Mainly due to reflection (micro-structuring of the surface helps here), incorrect wavelength of the light (the panel is only sensitive to a certain wavelength range) and heating of the panel (due to the incident light/thermal radiation). The remainder is either reflected or absorbed by the cell and re-emitted as heat. Absorption by e.g. the glass panel is slight (a few %), as is absorption/reflection by the necessary surface contacts (again, a few %). Higher efficiency is possible, but brings its own drawbacks (like higher cost). You could now go into two directions: - high efficiency cells/panels with (likely) higher cost and complexity for mounting (like lens or mirror based systems, aka concentrator systems, that increase the light level on the cells in order to increase efficiency) - low cost systems (cheap as dirt) that will allow you to cover every surface of a building, efficiency is less important if you can compensate by a much larger covered area As to the efficiency limit: there is a theoretical limit (from thermodynamics - don't ask me how or why) in the range of 30...40%, depending on which publication you want to believe in.
Q: If I wanted to add solar panels to my home to produce on average, 8 kWh of electricity daily, how much do you estimate it would cost using state of the art technology?I live in Virginia (Washington DC Metro Area), and I have Dominion Power. I pay the following electric rates:Jun-Sep $0.0904/kWhOct-May $0.0776/kWhAnnual Ave: $0.0824/kWhDistribution charges add on approximately another $0.0228/kWh.How long would the ROI for an 8 kWh/day solar system be?
Figure 8 hours of sun per day, so 8 kW-hr is a rate of kW, which is a medium sized panel, probably not enough to operate your house totally, unless you have a very small unit. Averaged over 24 hours, that is power at a rate of only 300 watts, enough for a TV. Average US home use is .2 kW, which over 24 hours is 29 kW-hr, plus you need extra for cloudy days, peak demands, and to charge batteries. You have to decide off-grid or on-grid, and if you want to (and are allowed to) sell excess power to the power company. Off gird, the cost of batteries and charge controller are a large part of the cost. On-grid, you have to purchase equipment approved by the power company to match your power with the grid. Panels will cost about $3 per watt, so for 000 watts that is $3000. Double that for installation, then add in cost of charge controller, inverter, batteries, etc. The last items depend on your alternatives, see paragraph above. .
Q: I need to build a battery array to use with my solar panels I just bought. I want to be able to store enough energy to be draw from it at night, possibly around the clock. Is there a down side to using the deep cycle battery I bought from autozone and 6 or 7 more just like it, or do I need to get some other battery?
There are batteries particularly made for solar, such as the Trojan T05-RE . I think the RE stands for renewable energy. A deep cycle battery should work all right, although not quite as well. What you want to do is try out your setup first, with just one battery, and the panels provided. If this is one of those 45 watt kits, you may be surprised at how little energy you actually get from the panels. Increasing the number of batteries won't help, either - that's like getting a larger water tank, when you only have a trickle to fill it. If your goal is really to save money, the most cost-effective solar is the grid-tied type, with no batteries at all. That's what we have, and I've never regretted it.
Q: (For a project)I know they are made of silicon, but I want to EVERYTHING they are made of. Ex Metal (What kind)Please tell me everything used from their production to the finished projectThank you
Well i am not sure but to my knowledge all i know is that the purpose is to save solar cells which are later created into energy Solar energy is generated from solar panels. Solar panels are slabs of semi-conductor metal. Technically speaking, they are a slab of silicon semi-conductor doped or added with impurities to make it a better conductor. Solar panels could also be made of Gallium Arsenide which is a semi-conductor metal exclusively used in photo-voltaic cells. The silicon slabs are polished and glossed before doping. After processing, for protection, a thin glass layer is embossed on the solar cells slab. Silicon also is shiny and reflects about 35% of sunlight. Hence, an anti-reflective coating is usually applied over the slabs to reduce the amount of sunlight lost. Amorphous silicon solar panels are different from the traditional ones made from silicon slabs. Amorphous silicon solar cells are thinner and more efficient that the silicon ones and also the materials cost of this variety is far lesser than the traditional. Amorphous silicon slabs are developed with superior processes which makes them less susceptible to breakage during transportation. This makes them a more viable investment when it comes to buying solar panels.
Q: We've been considering solar panels for a while now, and we'd like to know a little more about them. Please answer to the best of your knowledge. Thanks.
I think that solar photo-voltaics have improved tremendously in the last few years but are being promoted due to the simplicity of installation. Most of the residential energy needs is in heating water, residential heating and air-conditioning, all of which can be provided for with less expensive solar thermal panels. Once the base line energy needs of the household has been met with solar thermal, a much smaller photo-voltaic system can be installed for lighting and to run the pumps in the solar thermal system and the fans in the absorption air-conditioning unit powered by solar thermal. Since solar thermal is less than /0 the price of solar photo-voltaic, this should dramatically decrease the capital needed. Also remember that lower price solar photo-voltaic systems are on their way, development is going very quickly, the commercial units you buy today will probably be any where's from $4 a watt to $0 a watt but $ a watt systems have already been developed, just not widely available yet. You may also want to consider using solar shingles instead of solar panels for your photo-voltaic system.
Q: Can solar panels be installed on historical landmarks or monuments?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on historical landmarks or monuments. However, it requires careful planning and consideration to ensure that the installation does not compromise the integrity or aesthetics of the site.
Q: I am looking at building my own solar panels to at least help cut down the rising energy bill. I know its expensive. I already have the solar cells so no need to worry about listing that. But i am looking at wiring it directly into the house. Is there any parts that you could list for me, that would be great. thanks
Most okorder / . If you had an array of 0 or more panels, it would usually be cheaper to get a single, large inverter. The usual path taken with homemade panels seems to be using them to charge a battery, then running things of the battery. And it's usually a fun thing to do, but not a way to save money. Just so you know.
Q: Its cloudy out and i have a solar panel that has 3, .5 volt cells But how do i charge it without sun any other ways?
There okorder Why pay thousands of dollars for solar energy ($27,000 average cost) when you can build your own solar panel system for just a fraction of the retail cost. You can build a single solar panel or you can build an entire array of panels to power your whole house. Some people are saving 50% on their power bill, some people are reducing their bill to nothing. But what’s most impressive is that just by following these instructions some are even making the power company pay them!
