- Q: we are planing to move out of the grid. we need to operate constantly 2 laptops online - does any one can tell us how much solar panels we shall need to make sure of that?
- A laptop is about 70 to 00 W, and you have two. You also may need to power a router, and modem. So, about 50W to 250W contineous should cover it. To save power when not in use, you can let the display go blank. This will reduce your solar pannel, and battery size, and cost. You will need batteries, and blocking rectifier to store the energy for use at night, and a 300W to 400W inverter. Checkout the link below for purchasing solar equipment. You can only hope to get about 8 to 9 hours of full output from your solar pannels, and 80% efficiency. The laptops will be on and using about 200W for the 8 hours during the charging period. So your pannels, need to produce that plus 2 times more than this amount, so you can charge the batteries for the evening, at the same time. So for 24 hour operation, you will need 200W x8hrs for the laptops, plus (6 hours*70W)/8=340W avg. Total of ~540W for 8 hours. Assuming you use power saving modes when not in use, you can probably get away with 3x60W -- 520W to 600W pannel. ( Thuja is right, a few cloudy days may knock you offline) Batteries. A common low cost ( $40) automotive battery can hold about 40 Amp/hours at 2V. Under load, you may get 35 Amp hours at 0V, which is about 350Watts for one hour. You need about 80W avg for 6 hours, or ~ 2900Watt Hours. Which means you would need 9 automotive batteries. Deep storage batteries cost more, but are more durable. 6*00W pannels, $460*6 ~ $2800 Inverter $70 Batteries $400 Battery cables, rectifier, lugs, connectors $50 There are probably some other hidden costs. I was rooting for you, but it appears to be pricey. Another thing you can do, is to use the new energy efficient RF florescent bulbs for lighting. The color and brightness are excellent, and a 60W bulb only uses about 3W, and they last a lot longer as well.
- Q: I am looking for an average sized solar panel (Just Panel), not 2 big n not 2 small. Any idea where i can find in abudhabigt;??
- Abu Dhabi Solar plant Shams will be completed by the end of this year and will be ready to provide Abu Dhabi with power at commercial prices. Construction began during [the third quarter] of 200. The project's cost is $600 million (Dh2.2 billion) and with its completion, it will be the largest solar project in the world, Yousuf Al Ali, General Manager of Shams Power Company told Gulf News. Once completed, Shams will be one of the largest concentrated solar power [CSP] plants in the world, extending over an area of 2.5 square kilometres with a capacity of approximately 00MW and a solar field consisting of 768 parabolic trough collectors, Al Ali said. He added: Shams is a joint venture between Masdar (60 per cent), Total (20 per cent) and Abengoa (20 per cent). - Q: I'm just geting into electonics and stuff. So I am trying to make a simple USB charger. I'm looking for at least 4 volts output. What I've got is two solar panels (detached) a 4 AA battery holder, and a circuit board with an led on it (took the solar panels out of old lawn lights. I need more charge out of my panels (I think) so I tried attaching them. I soldered the positive wire from one to the positive connection on the other and negative wire to negative connection. After doing so and checking the multimeter, it says I have no output at all. How do you connect them?
- You have to look at the power output of the cell. The first consideration has to do with voltage. A single cell with no load might output one volt or less. Wiring cells in series would double that output, at least in theory. (Internal resistance will lower the actual voltage.) You've wired the cells in parallel, however. Try unsoldering one electrode and then measure voltage output of each cell. There is still the issue of current output. I don't know if there will be enough with your setup. How many cells are there and what kind of batteries were they charging?
- Q: I just moved into somewhere with solar panels but don't really understand them...all I know is that they heat the water.Do I still have to turn the hot water on with the solar panels or do they heat it automatically or do they store the energy until I turn on the hot water?!
- Custom solar-heating systems are unique. Does yours have a circulating pump? Does it have a storage tank? Is the fluid that goes to the panels separated from the household water and transfers heat through a heat-exchanger radiator, and the fluid has antifreeze in it? If it does, is the antifreeze of the variety that won't poison your family if there is a leak? Does your system have a thermostat-controlled pump that turns on when the water in the panels are hot? Does it have a limit-thermostat to turn off the pump when water in the storage tank is hot? There are many more variations to operation of solar-heating panels. Find out who designed it or who knows how to operate it and ask them.
- Q: How much sunlight is needed for solar panels to work?
- Solar panels can generate electricity even with small amounts of sunlight, but they work most efficiently with direct sunlight. Generally, they can still produce energy on cloudy or overcast days, although at a reduced capacity.
- Q: how much energy does solar panels save you? (like a month, year, etc)
- It depends on the size of the solar panels and the intensity of the solar-light. So, there's difference in every place. It's impossible to answer unless there's detail of panel size, panel quantities, average rainfall, average solar days, etc.
- Q: Are you a Solar Panel Specialist/Genius/Enthusiast?
- No, just an amateur. I guess that could be called an Enthusiast. I think most people find the topic somewhat interesting, some more than others. Why do you ask?
- Q: I need a 2v (500-800ma) solar panel that in can fit on a 24inx4in flat surface. Where can i get one this size and with this power?
- Hey Jeff, what you're talking about is frequently referred to as a, solar battery maintainer. There are lots of places that make and sell them, I have seen them in many auto parts stores and truck stops along the freeways. Go to google and search for a solar battery maintainer, they come is sizes similar to what you are searching for, but it will be difficult to find one that is not over 4 wide. Lots of them are about the size of the top of a shoe box, maybe 2 X 6, and come with a cigarette lighter cord attached. A 2 volt model at 500 ma, or /2 amp, works out to about 9 watts, assuming the 2 volt nominal voltage panel is actually optimized for 8 volts, as most of them are. These devices are designed to sit on the dash board of your car and keep your battery charged if you leave the car for a long period of time, like at the airport for a week in the winter. They actually work for that, we've used one before. What are you planning on doing with it? Charging a battery or running a device directly? Remember if you hook it straight to a device, and the current requirements of the device are less than the available sun will develope with your panel, the voltage may climb to a level too high for your device. If you're charging a battery, this does not cause a problem. Another option is to build your own. It can be a lot of work for just one panel, I've not done it myself, but there are videos on the subject. That device in real goods is a flexible panel, known in the solar world as, Amorphous. They are still a bit experimental, the ones they made a few years ago did not hold up as well as the solid ones, and they are expensive. You can get a /2 amp maintainer for around $25. Good luck Jeff, and take care, Rudydoo
- Q: Can solar panels be used in off-grid systems?
- Yes, solar panels can definitely be used in off-grid systems. In fact, they are a popular and reliable choice for generating electricity in remote locations where access to the traditional power grid is limited or non-existent. Off-grid solar systems store excess energy in batteries, ensuring a continuous power supply even during periods of low sunlight.
- Q: How do solar panels and heaters work?
- well, I suggest you that Amaze-Heaters are good for you.
