- Without going into a lot of details, what you're describing is the startup behavior of Windows, not the BIOS. Pressing F8 is the way to bring up the Windows Boot Menu, which gives options as to how to boot the system. If you don't press F8 Windows should start normally. If it doesn't, and if the Boot Menu isn't functioning properly, then you've trashed some of the initial boot functions of Windows. I don't have that screen up right now, but you may be able to rescue things by putting the Windows installation CD into your CD-ROM drive, changing the boot order in the BIOS so that the CD-ROM drive is checked first, and then use the Windows repair function on the CD to try and repair things...but don't hold out much hope.

- The last time I had a machine repaired the repairman told me to always buy a simple machine that would be easy to repair. The worst he said would be the new front loaders that have all the digital controls. Unless it is under warranty, expect to pay a lot to repair it. The best he said was the simple dial control machines. He said they last for a long time and there repairs are not that expensive. As for cost, well the simple dial top loaders are the cheapest ones you will find. They are easier on your back and they do come with energy star ratings.
