To install one makes minimal holes and you could put it high enough that your son could not reach it. They cost relatively little, so you could leave it there when/if you moved, and your landlord would actually be getting an upgrade, ( additional lock) so I can't see the he could/would complain. Meanwhile, you would have the peace of mind that your son would be safe.
