Solar panel working process

In addition to being the ultimate source of all life on earth, the sun is an infinitely renewable, completely pollution-free source of electricity. Instead of burning fossil fuels dug up from the ground in a big power plant – a very 19th century, industrial age approach, when you think about it – solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity, with no harmful emissions.

The basic unit of a solar panel is a solar cell, which usually consists of one or two layers of silicon-based semiconductor wafers. When struck by the photons in sunlight, the solar cell generates an electrical charge due to the "photovoltaic effect" – which is a pretty good name, since it produces voltage from photons. The flow of these electrons moves in a steady electrical current from one side of the cell to the other.

Dozens of these PV cells are packaged together into solar modules, which in turn are packaged into solar panels that are mounted on a rooftop and arranged to maximize their hours of exposure to direct sunlight. Because the electricity generated by all those solar cells is direct current (DC), it is then sent to an inverter that transforms the power into the same alternating current (AC) used by the appliances in your home and the local utility electricity distribution grid. Increasingly, these inverters are getting "smart," providing data monitoring for solar installation performance and other grid integration services.

Q: I'm curious to know if the small solar panels on a calculator (ie TI-32) could produce a voltage similar to what is used in a single-use (disposable) camera, approximately 4V.
It isn't Volts that matter if you're trying to put the calculator solar panel on the camera. It would be the amps. The calculator's solar panel will put out however many volts or very close to what the battery puts out. If you want you can test it out with a Volt/Ammeter. You see, those cameras use 2 double A batteries. They are going to put out a higher current than the small dime shaped battery in the back of your calculator; a higher voltage perhaps too. Those disposable cameras have a photo flash capacitor in them that has to charge. You can hear them charge up when you tell it to turn on the camera's flash. Sounds like a winding then the little orange light comes on. That light means the capacitor is charged. You SHOULDN'T be able to change out the batteries in the camera with a solar panel from a calculator without having to wait days for that flash capacitor to charge. Sorry. EDIT: HOWEVER, you can take multiple solar panels and wire them in a parallel circuit to get more current(amperes) or wire them in a series circuit to get a higher voltage. If you were to do this you could power whatever you wanted with them. Even your house if you were to get a rectifier to convert the power from DC to AC.
Q: I'm curious, for those who have had solar panels installed on the rooves of their houses:How much did you pay? How much energy do the panels produce? Did it dramatically cut down on your electricity bill? Was it worth it? Thanks!
I say yes, I had a system put in a few months ago. I paid $6K and my utility paid $0K. I should break even in about 6 years. The system is guaranteed for 25 years, so I will have at least 9 years of free energy. I went from a bill of around $200 per month to under $20 in the summer. I will pay a little more in the winter months because less daylight, but I don't use as much energy in the winter. Each year electricity goes up an average of 5%, so while my neighbors have a larger bill each month, I'll be staying under $50 for a long time. Even without the rebate I would have a break even time of about 0 years, still 5 years of free energy.
Q: Say if i had a 2KW system is thtat just one big solar panel or does the whole system have little solarpanels together.?
As Aviophage says, there is plenty of info around. Solar panels produce electrical energy from the sunlight's energy. The sun puts out around 00W per square meter, and the panels are up to 20% efficient at converting this. If you are looking for a Grid Connected power system, they are usually made up of 24V modules about 50W each. The full voltage produced is then around 50V to 500V DC depending on the sun etc. They are connected to a specialised grid connect or grid interactive inverter (look up Sunny Boy for an example) which converts this to mains power for use around the house, while any remainder is exported to the supply network. The supply company may buy this at premium rates, and governments may provide subsidies to approved installations. There may also be carbon credit certificates when you buy a system. Not all places allow such things to be connected to the grid, but this market is rapidly changing. The links below should get you started.
Q: What specification of solar panel would I need to power a laptop every day? I would need to use it for about 0 hours or so every day. I don't know anything about solar panels, but I am seriously thinking of getting one now and don't know who to ask.
You will need, A battery to store the electricity from the solar panel. The amount of electricity from the panel varies up and down as things such as clouds, position of the sun, etc. reduce the amount of solar rays hitting the panel. The battery stores it all, the ups and downs, and sends it back out at a steady voltage so you can operate your p.c. / appliance. A minimum of 45 watts solar panel. 60 watts would be preferable. 45 watts will charge a battery in one day under ideal conditions. You turn the panel as the sun moves across the sky, no clouds. 60 watts will charge a battery in one day with out moving and regardless of clouds. A controler to prevent the electricity from flowing backwards from the battery to the solar panel when the sun goes behind a cloud or sets at night and the charge drops below the voltage of the battery. A good controller will tell you the charge condition of your battery so you know when it is too low to operate your p.c. safely. And finally an inverter with True Sine Wave capability to change the electricity from the battery into usuable power for your PC and other electronics. Not all inverters produce true sine wave electricity. The electricity has static in it and will make your pc screen jump around and not function as it should. New digital T.V.'s also require true sine wave electricity to operate. Go the extra cost and get the inverter with true sine wave and be happy with the way your p.c. functions. Figure out how many Watts your p.c. or appliance will draw. and match the Inverter to the need. Do not go too big, as they cost more and consume more of your stored electricity to operate. Save as much electricity as you can. You will be able to operate your p.c. appliance longer. When not using your p.c., you can operate your T.V. or other low watt appliance.
Q: I installed a 60watt solar panel on the top of my patio/pergola. This is wired to a charge controller then a battery in my basement. Do I need to run a ground from the solar panel? If so, whats the easiest way to do so? Is a wire attached to the aluminum frame then connected to a foot long rod into the ground enough?
Did you ever evaluate possessing the equipment your self? Why not take all of the tax incentives your self? Why pay an identical fee in 7 years from now? that may not a honest deal. Did you ever verify with them what might ensue once you want to sell your place before the tip of the lease? Our enterprise has put in photograph voltaic panel structures in 8 states in the Northeast and we adore to work out the tip consumer identifying to purchase the photograph voltaic array. we glance on the lease ideas as a final motel if there's a financing situation. the guy who owns it makes the money, short and easy. concerning utilising it whilst the capacity is going down, the inverters can not function whilst there is not any grid capacity. you may proceed to function utilising a battery equipment and yet another inverter, yet that will advance your fee extremely plenty as properly. you should use yet another generator as properly, which may be a less costly fee selection. you want somebody who's staring at on your appropriate interest, and not their very own investor. you've got your equipment value paid returned in basically some years!
Q: Hi everyone, I am a novice in solar energy system. I want to know if I am on the right track. Recently I bought a 30 W solar panel, 5 Amp controller, and a 22 Ah battery, how many watts and what kind of INVERTER do I need? I did an research some said 50 W and some said 300 W. And am I right on the 5 amp controller and 22 Ah battery to provide larger output of electric, or the higher the # the greater output for 30 W solar panel?Really appreciate for anyone who help!!!
must be one of the place who's place have sun
Q: I don't know anything about solar and what connections that have to be made. any advice and wisdom would be appreciated. thanks
Yes. Basically, here's what you need (I'm keeping this general on purpose): The panels themselves -- how large an area depends on average power consumption and how much power you can get on average. That, in turn , depends on climate. You'd need more in Seattle than Tuscon, for example. I'd guess something in the neighborhod of 0 square feet. Depends also on haow many gadgets (printers, etc.) you have. You'll need a power storage system. Lithium gives you the best poser density (of off-the-shelf stuff) but an ordinary car battery works well and is reliable. And, of course, a control system to manage the power generation/storage/use so everything works together without that annoying smell that tells you you just cooked a few hundred bucks worth of equuipment! :)
Q: If you buy everything you need for a grid-tied solar set up, can you install it yourself or is it required that a professional installs it?
Solar panels have to be installed by a professional in order to get the government rebates. Also the systems must meet state and local electrical codes. Most modern inverters will not turn on unless there is live power from the MAINS, so a ultility company is NOT required for any installation anywhere. There are plenty of electrical contractors and speciality solar contractors out there to help you to make sure that the system is properly designed with the correct components, properly installed, and legally certified. Also many states require a permit that may have a large fee before any installation and may not allow the homeowner, especially for city homes, so it is best to check first. You might be able to get away with it if you live in the country, but consider the safety as well. See if you can work with your contractor to get the materials that you both agree upon as well. They can help guide you based upon their experience. Also shop around for pricing as the panels are now going below $ per watt !
Q: Can solar panels be installed on tile roofs?
Yes, solar panels can be installed on tile roofs. However, the installation process may require additional precautions and expertise to ensure the integrity of the roof.
Q: Where can I buy solar panels other than online in Charlotte, NC?
If okorder / They have a network of installers they work with around the country so they should be able connect you with someone locally. If you visit their site they'll provide you with a free solar quote, a break-even analysis, estimated IRR, cash flow analysis, annual savings, and all the incentives you are eligible to receive. Basically, they'll provide you with all the info you need to make a smart decision (if you're looking into a residential scale project of course).
