Q: Hey i am going to build a scale model house and demonstrate how you would use solar panels to provide energy. I am thinking of buying some kit solar panels and wiring up some lights to show how they power the home. Also i might hook up a battery in the house to show how you can store the energy. I might also have a large battery hooked up outside the house to represent a power plant that could provide emergency power. Any ideas or comments would be great. Thanks
By gaps you could mean that it is expensive. Also, there is the debate over whether or not giving people incentives like tax breaks is a good idea Also, it takes a while to recoup the initial invesment in an array, although tax incentives would help and lastly, a solar array big enough to power the united states would have to be in an obnoxiously large area, alhough the ideal areas are already uninhabited because they are too hot.
Q: I need to use solar panels to charge lead acid batteries in an off-grid application. I understand that solar panels have a open circuit maximum voltage and an maximum amperage under no resistance, and that one can optimize the power output by regulating the load (resistance). If so, is just connecting 2 -volt solar panels to a lead-acid battery inefficient? Are there devices that will maximize 2 volt output power (by varying the resistance)? Am I on the right track here? Thanks for any help.
The answer is actually quite complicated, but if you're planning on building just a very small system, most likely, the panel will be small and weak. In this case, connecting a panel that is 8 volts open circuit directly to a lead-acid battery is probably the most efficient way to charge. There are charge controllers that you can buy, some of which actively track the maximum power point for charging your battery. Unfortunately, those controllers might eat 5 or 0 watts, just to get you another few percent of charging efficiency. If your panel is only 50 watts in the first place, you can see that this is not a good deal. If you're getting serious panels (clue: price $500 each), then you may very well benefit from a charge controller with MPPT (max power point tracking). Lead-acid, either a flooded cell like your car battery, or AGM, are the standard for solar energy storage. Lithium ion is better in many ways, being less sensitive to temperature, state of discharge, and they are also lighter. Charging them is also more straightforward with the right circuitry. The problem is, they cost like $500 per kWh, compared with less than a tenth that price for lead-acid.
Q: a) i'd like to get a solar panel to make this thing i saw in popular science, it was a bag that had a solar panel in the side (you just attach it with grommets into a clear vinyl pocket you make. its for charging elecronics and stuff) and i was wondering what kind i should look at, do they come flexible? can i get them on OKorder? what kind of wattage should i look for (btw it also had a little voltage regulator and stuff to make a little usb in your bag) so any info on that!b) i was thinking about like putting solar panels on my roof, where can i look into that, is that a good choice, has anyone done it, how did it work out? thank you, just curious
answering b) your home circutry won't be able to handle solar power energy (or your circut breaker,it will start cuttin out every 5 min)you would have to replace your home circutry(that costs a LOT of money, over $8500)
Q: Are there any free classes to learn about solar energy and building a solar panel
You do'nt want to build a solar panel. The heart of a solar system is the Converter. From that you know that you will have 20 VAC output, but you need to know what kind of input you need prior to building your system. That way you can buy solar panels at that voltage or hook them up in series to get the voltage you need to be converted. You'll then need to calculate the power (watts) you use from day to day, that way your solar system can provide you with what you need. Problem is, NOW, you have a choice to make. If you want to just cut down on your reliance of grid power, there are companies that will do all this for you, and hook you up to the grid so that by day you will be using nothing but solar power, but at night you will be running off the grid. These companies generally make it harder on you to buy the system outright by not providing you maintenance or repair services.....so that could be an issue, which is how they keep you 'leasing' the equipment from them. OR You can go completely off the grid in which case you will have to buy back up batteries and wire them in so that they are charging during the day so that you will be running off of battery power by night.
Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of dust or dirt?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of dust or dirt. However, the accumulation of dust and dirt on the surface of the solar panels can reduce their efficiency in generating electricity. Regular cleaning and maintenance may be required to ensure optimal performance in such areas.
Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of volcanic activity?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of volcanic activity. While volcanic activity may pose certain challenges such as ash emissions or occasional cloud cover, solar panels can still generate electricity during periods of low activity. Additionally, solar panels can be designed and installed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, including volcanic ash deposition, ensuring their long-term functionality.
Q: I am doing a science fair project on solar panels, and I need four solar panels to conduct the experiment. I would only need the solar panels for a week. What type of solar panel should I get?
If okorder / for some ideas.
Q: Can solar panels be used in areas with high levels of bird or bat activity?
Yes, solar panels can be used in areas with high levels of bird or bat activity. However, certain precautions should be taken to minimize potential risks. For instance, installing bird deterrents like netting or spikes can prevent birds from nesting or perching on the panels. Similarly, incorporating specialized designs or modifications can minimize the impact on bats. By implementing these measures, solar panels can coexist with bird and bat populations while still harnessing the sun's energy efficiently.
Q: I don't see much solar panels on people's houses where I live. I got a long time to go before doing so but I was planning on buying a few solar panels when I retire in the far future. In your opinion, is such an investment worth it? Would you buy them? I realize they are very expensive hence why I said when I retire. Thanks for your opinion
Regarding okorder /.. . In Hawaii, solar is going in like crazy, with long backlogs for installation. If it will be a long time until you retire, then there is no rush. The price of technology tends to go down with time, and in fact, solar panels today are less than half the price of what they cost us in 2006. Also, who knows where you'll be living when you retire? If it's Honolulu, the place may already have solar panels. In the woods of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, it might never be worth it (but look into wind, there).
Q: With no moving parts, no fuel piping and so on...
They are made of costly materials and require expensive manufacturing processes. The market has been limited because people are not catching on very well to the new idea. The more we buy and use solar panels, the more the price will come down.
