Fluorescent lights are more energy efficient because they use less energy to produce the same amount of light than an incandescent light bulb. In the case of the fluorescent light bulb, light is produced by exciting atoms (the mercury gas), which then gives off UV rays, which strikes the glass of the tube, which is covered in a sort-of glow in the dark paint. The UV rays make the paint glow, which is how they light-up. The incandescent light bulbs force electrons through tungsten filament, which resists the flow of electrons. This resistance causes immense heat, and makes the filament literally glow white hot. Fluorescent light bulbs do not get hot like incandescent light bulbs, and that is the main reason they are more efficient. The filament has a certain resistance to current. This resistance to current produces a potential that the electrons must overcome in the filament. The act on overcoming this voltage requires energy which is transfered from electrical energy to thermal and light energy. Mostly thermal energy, which is why a regular light bulb is less efficient than a halogen light bulb which works using a different physical concept. Most materials convert electrical energy to thermal energy. But a light bult has a specially designed material which can convert more of this energy to light. This is why you look at the Wattage of a light bulb. Wattage is a measure of how fast electrical energy is being coverted to light. (Energy/Time). This is why higher watt light bulbs are brighter. I guess Thomas Edison was pretty smart.

blacklight is UV light and it is more energitic than visible blue light so i think that there is nothing that will shine in blue light unless the blue lighg is accompanied by UV lights. And also remember that black light don't exist.

Thats is a marketing ploy. That way they can get the reefers and planted tank money. Ian is right... 6,500 - 6,700 is best. 10,000 is the highest you can go, 5,000k is the lowest. You can mix and match bulbs to whatever colour light pleases you. Other than that I would like to add that petsmart has a T5NO fixture under aqueon. Not HO.. but still better than T12's and T8's.
