- Q: How do solar panels affect the power grid?
- Solar panels can have both positive and negative impacts on the power grid. On the positive side, solar panels generate clean and renewable energy, reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. They can also help to decentralize the power grid by producing electricity closer to where it is consumed, reducing transmission losses. However, the intermittent nature of solar power can pose challenges to grid stability and reliability, as energy generation fluctuates with weather conditions. Additionally, the excess electricity generated by solar panels at certain times can strain the grid if not properly managed. Overall, while solar panels offer significant environmental benefits, their integration into the power grid requires careful planning and management.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on schools or universities?
- Yes, solar panels can definitely be installed on schools or universities. In fact, many educational institutions are increasingly adopting solar energy as a sustainable and cost-effective solution to meet their electricity needs. By installing solar panels, schools and universities can reduce their carbon footprint, save money on energy bills, and provide a valuable educational opportunity for students to learn about renewable energy.
- Q: i want to know how to hook up solar panels to my existing power. all i can find on the internet is to use batteries and a inverter. but i want to use all of my existing lights and outlets off of the solar energy. i have heard that you can actually turn the meter backwards and use supplied power when needed. thats what i want to do and is it possible to do myself and if so, how?
- Hooking up without batteries is actually the most common way to do it, but it's a non-trivial project, and dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. There is a device called a grid-tied inverter - that performs the task of putting energy back into the power grid. The reason you don't see homemade panels being hooked to the grid is because the power company's permission is required, and they will not grant it unless you meet building codes, and those codes require parts with at least a UL listing. No homemade panels would quality.
- Q: If you want to instal solar panels...how often do you have to replace them?
- Expect a water heating panel to last about the same as a water heater, 0 to 5 years. Actually, my brother's system is coming up on 5 years, and is not giving trouble yet, so maybe technology has advanced. I have actually never personally known of anyone replacing a solar electric panel due to wear-out. I have heard of occasional replacements due to accidents, including natural disasters like lightning strikes. And one brand of panels had manufacturing defects around the year 2000, but that manufacturer owned up and replaced those free of charge to their customers. A standard warranty on a solar electric panel nowadays is 25 years.
- Q: Why are they placed there? How come they aren't placed on the floor or window. My fiance and I are interested in putting solar panels on our new home. I was really curious and google wasn't giving me the answer. My roof is pretty small in our new house and I don't think it would fit there. Why is it usually placed there and is there another place? You will be chosen as best answer if you answer all my questions. Thanks in advance, and I would appreciate if nobody is rude. Otherwise, I will have to report abuse.
- Solar panels are placed on the roof because many times the roof has good exposure to the sun providing the roof is not blocked by trees or something else so that sufficient sunlight wouldn't be absorbed. Also the panels would more likely not get damaged on the roof opposed to being in the yard. If they were mounted on the windows, how could you see? And, the windows could easily break and then what would happen to the panels? Placing the solar panels on the floor would not be practical. A lot of sunlight is needed for the cells to produce electricity and how much goes on the floor? Most roofs are at an angle which could perhaps improve the amount of sunlight the panels would get, and roofs provide a lot of unused space. The roof is the best place. Furthermore, roof solar panels are available now to blend in better with the roof so that they are more pleasing to the eye. Even if you have a small roof, some panels could be placed there provided the roof is not blocked so that the sunlight it gets would be sufficient (about 4 or 5 hours of sunlight a day is needed). And, if you needed addition panels, they could be mounted in your yard as long as the mount was close to your power box and received sufficient sunlight. I applaud your desire to use solar panels. You could possibly save 50 - 90% on your electric bill and help your environment at the same time! A Win - Win situation!!
- Q: Parents planning on buying some solar panels for our house down in Dubai it really hot there I'm currently living in Canada, anyways I'm wondering how many solar panels and volts ill need to light up a 2400sq ft. House? Please leave you're suggestions below!
- It's not really the solar panels that power the house, they charge a battery bank and there's an inverter that jumps the battery power up to household current level. If you start getting into more expensive systems, they can sense when the batteries are full and start diverting power into the local electric grid. Some places the electric company is required to pay you for generating current, other places tell you tough luck. I suggest looking on OKorder or something at some of the home solar kits on sale there and look at how large a house they are rated for to get an idea of how big a system you're going to need. I don't know if you have access to the power bill history of the house you're getting in Dubai, but the power company there might be able to provide you with a history of average kW hours the house consumes. A 2400 sqft house with a gas stove and a gas water heater and wood heat is going to consume far less electricity than a house with all electric appliances and the consumption history of an individual house should reflect that so you can buy appropriately.
