- Q: I heard that solar energy has a lot of advantages but are there any drawbacks in using the solar panels?
- The major drawbacks are the high cost with low power payback. Also, the sun isn't shining for a good share of the time. life span is 20-30 years and then you have to spend the money all over again. It's cheaper to use public utilities for power, but not as green.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on farmlands or agricultural fields?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on farmlands or agricultural fields. In fact, solar farms have become increasingly common in these areas due to their dual purpose of generating renewable energy while allowing for continued agricultural use of the land. This practice is known as agrivoltaics or solar farming, and it provides an opportunity for farmers to diversify their income by leasing or owning the land for solar power generation. Additionally, the shade provided by solar panels can benefit certain crops, leading to increased yields and reduced water usage.
- Q: What is the impact of roof age on solar panels' efficiency?
- The impact of roof age on solar panels' efficiency can vary depending on the specific condition of the roof. In general, an older roof may need repairs or replacement before installing solar panels to ensure proper installation and optimal performance. Additionally, an aged roof may have structural issues or shading problems that can affect the efficiency of solar panels. Therefore, it is important to assess and address any roof concerns before installing solar panels to maximize their efficiency and longevity.
- Q: My family and I are looking into solar panels for our home. But I'm unsure how it would be priced. This month our home used ,623 kwh. The solar panel company said we should expect $6-$9 per watt used. What would that put as at?
- With out doing the math,, I think I would ask the solar panel company to explain it to you as they are trying to sell it to you. And see if you have some sort of warranty of savings. Make them work for the sale!!
- Q: Can solar panels be installed in areas with high wind speeds?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed in areas with high wind speeds. However, it is important to ensure that the solar panel mounting systems are designed and installed properly to withstand the strong winds. This may involve using appropriate mounting techniques, securing the panels firmly, and considering the orientation and tilt angles to minimize the impact of wind resistance.
- Q: Can solar panels be used for street lighting?
- Yes, solar panels can be used for street lighting. By harnessing the energy from the sun, solar panels can power street lights, eliminating the need for electricity from the grid and reducing carbon emissions. Solar-powered street lighting systems are increasingly being adopted as a sustainable and cost-effective solution for illuminating streets and public spaces.
- Q: I need to know how solar photovoltaic panels work. Anyone have a good explanation?
- Hey E Girl, photovoltiac panels are pretty simple. They start with a solid block of silicone, and shave thin layers off of them, called wafers. Once you have about 72 of them, you take half of them and dope them with boron, then the other half are doped with phosphorous. Once that's done, they take one each phosphorous and boron wafer, and glue them together with a special conductive epoxy glue, and attach a wire to each wafer. When the two glued wafers are exposed to the sun, a reaction occurs that forces free electrons from the silicone particles from one wafer onto the other, and a voltage is generated between them, about /2 volt to be exact. Once all 36 pairs are glued together, they are wired in series, connecting the phosphourous wafer from one to the boron wafer on the next, and so on. If you start with 72 wafers, you'll have 36 pairs glued together when you are done. At /2 volt each, that makes a 8 volt panel, which is used to charge a 2 volt battery. The charging source always has to have a few more volts than the battery. These 36 pairs of cells are then arranged on some kind of back board, glued down, covered with acrylic glass and mounted in a frame. There are some great websites you can go to for more info, I will list some below. Did you know that there are over 00,000 homes and businesses in the US alone that use some level of solar power to operate their electrical systems? That's good news. We actually live in one of those homes, it is powered by both the wind and sun and heated with solar and wood. I hope this answers your question, good luck, and take care, Rudydoo
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on the ground instead of a roof?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on the ground instead of a roof. Ground-mounted solar panels are a popular option for those who do not have suitable roof space or prefer not to install them on their roofs. Ground installations offer flexibility in terms of panel orientation and can potentially generate more electricity due to optimal sun exposure.
- Q: I just connected my 5 Watt 2V solar panel directly to my 300 Watt 2 inverter. It worked for about 2 minutes then it popped (sparks, smoke etc)! What the hell did I do wrong? I thought the solar panel was 2 volts? Can someone with experience with these things help me out?
- . A 5 WATT panel can NOT power a 300 WATT inverter. 2. IF using 2 volts, then you need a 2 volt battery in the circuit as well. Panel charges battery which powers inverter. When the inverter pulls more power than the panel puts out, it gets it from the battery until the voltage drops low enough to shut down the inverter. NOTE: SOME cheap units do NOT have protective circuitry, and when the voltage drops, the current rises and burns them up.
- Q: With no moving parts, no fuel piping and so on...
- They are made of costly materials and require expensive manufacturing processes. The market has been limited because people are not catching on very well to the new idea. The more we buy and use solar panels, the more the price will come down.
