- Wow. This is a big question. First, are you in the United States? If so, then I would look at a couple of web sites. First, I would look at joining ASES - the American Solar Energy Society. (Actually, I'd do this whether or not you were in the US) Their magazine will have ads and directorys and so forth for panel manufacturers, inverter manufacturers, rack vendors, metering companies, etc. At the very least, their web site will give you numerous links to popular panel manufacturers. Right now, it can be difficult to get panels in the US. My buying agent can't promise us a significant number of panels until at least late this coming fall. And prices are going up due to a silicon shortage at the moment. Still, you could probably get your hands on small quantities. You just might not be able to choose exactly which manufacturer you want. Also, I'd look into getting NABCEP certification. This is the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners. They provide a referral service for people looking for solar installers, and they may have a net work of members that could help get you started. Good luck!

- My mum has solar panels and her electricity is still on all the time. If she uses stuff during the day, it doesn't cost her anything, as the panels are generating electricity, but at night if she uses things, then it will cost her coz there's no sun and no electricity being generated. She's still connected to the grid to use electricity but because she's feeding the electricity produced by her solar panels back into the grid the company pays her a certain amount for the no. of Watts that's produced. They cost a lot to install, but as she is generating more than she's using (even taking night time into account) she is being paid more back. e.g. before panels she paid ~?30per month. Now she receives ~?70per month. so she's about ?00 a month better off (coz she's saving the 30 AND being paid the 70 on top of that)! and will therefore gain the money back that she paid in in about 8 years or so. - You would need a pretty hefty panel, the standard power charger is like 0 watts. You would need more than that for the overhead of charging a battery and converter loss. You would need a regulated supply, like a car ipad adapter, I seen them for like 20 bucks. They have to say Ipad , the ipod/iphone chargers have less power and would charge much slower.

- small solar panels will produce some electricity under artificial light, but not nearly as much as in sunlight. Is that enough to charge your laptop? probably not, but you would have to try it to be certain. Of course you would have to orient it to get the maximum light, and that may not be possible in the tight confines of an airline seat. don't forget they dim the lights at night. Bottom line, won't work. Some aircraft have a connector to allow you to power (and charge) your laptop. It you have that, you need to get the right cable. .
- Q: I was having a discussion with a friends about solar panels.He says that if there is a solar panel (sp) on the ground and a solar panel (sp2) high in the atmosphere (in the stratosphere) the difference in power output between sp and sp2 negligible. I said that there would be a large difference in power output because sp has all of the atmosphere to block the suns rays and sp2 has very little atmosphere because it is very high up (in the stratosphere) therefore more sun can get to the panel and more power is produced.who is correct? many thanks in advance, please leave sources if possible, for validity.

- Q: How much does 000 square feet of solar panels cost? This is for a pool with dimensions 75ft by 25ft? How much will it cost including installation fee and the water heater?
- My Father-in-Law had around 300sqft of solar panels installed for the equivalent of around ?3000 or $5000. These were just the cheap and relatively inefficient black plastic tubes that were installed on his roof. This was in South Africa where the labour rates are quite cheap. The system works okay and heats a 40ft x 20ft outdoor pool to over 30C in the height of summer. Rather than a pool heater, I think it might be good to look at an air source heat pump to help heat the water in Autumn/Winter when you don't get enough sun to heat the pool. These will be expensive (over $5000), but they will use less than 30% of the electricity of a standard electric water heater. Just the solar panels could cost you $5-20K including fitting.
