- Q: I have a shed that has wiring run for light bulb and a couple outlets. It is in a dark corner of my yard and at night is kinda creepy to go in with even a flashlight. I am weighing the option/expense of running electricity from the house on an overhead line versus putting up a 45 watt solar panel on the metal roof with inverter, battery etc. Sunlight is good to excellent at the location. Question is - will this be sufficient for the occasional use of light and an outlet? What can I expect? Pros and cons appreciated
- Lets say, for a simple approximation, that the 45 watt panel produces 45 watts /3 of the time and nothing the rest of the time. Each day, this will produce 8 hours times 45 watts = 360 watt hours. Also assume the battery charge controller and inverter waste half of that power, leaving 80 watt hours per day. If you use compact fluorescent lamps, that would allow you to burn 80 watts worth for an hour every day, or 90 watts for 2 hours, etc. That is a lot of light for a shed. You might consider using much less efficient tungsten filament lamps, but eliminate the inverter and choose low voltage (automotive) lamps that can run directly across the battery and lower the total cost, but give you only about half the light times time. The main advantage of the inverter might be that it would allow you to use small power tools or appliances in the shed. -- Regards, John Popelish
- Q: What is the average size of a residential solar panel system?
- The average size of a residential solar panel system is typically between 5 to 10 kilowatts (kW), depending on the energy needs and available rooftop space of the home.
- Q: If a solar panel is a .5kW system, what length of time is it putting out that much power? Every hour?
- Power = work done/time taken In other words, Watts=Joules/second. In this respect, power is a little like speed (m/s). Your question is looking at a car with a 50mph top speed, and asking how long is it going that fast? The solar panel will produce .5KW for as long as you require it. Enough to boil a kettle, run a modest electric heater etc,
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on rooftop gardens or green roofs?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed on rooftop gardens or green roofs. In fact, these types of roofs provide an ideal space for solar panel installation as they often have ample sunlight exposure and can help optimize energy efficiency of the building. Additionally, solar panels on rooftop gardens or green roofs can contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly environment by combining renewable energy generation with green infrastructure.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed on factories or manufacturing facilities?
- Yes, solar panels can definitely be installed on factories or manufacturing facilities. In fact, these large industrial buildings often have expansive roof spaces that are ideal for installing solar panels. By harnessing solar energy, factories and manufacturing facilities can significantly reduce their reliance on traditional energy sources, lower their carbon footprint, and potentially save on electricity costs in the long run.
- Q: They have been around long enough to be cheaper. Unless they are made out of a natural material that is rare and hard to find, there is no reason why they should be so expensive. On another note, I think that all low power devices like cell phones and even laptops should have solar panels. Even if it is not enough to fully power the device for a long period of time, it will provide some electricity savings and with millions of people saving a little power adds up.
- Photo okorder /... Notice it costs over $200 and it takes up a sizable amount of space. Plus you have to expose it to bright sun light. Over all this is not something the average consumer wants to spend money on or fuss with. If something is expensive, difficult or inconvenient to use then people won't use it. Just the basic economics of such a device limits its sales never mind its functionality and usability. Even if you made a small one buit into the cover to extend the battery you won't get much of an extension and you will increase the cost of your laptop. Consider how people shop, will they buy the more expensive laptop for a questionable amount of battery extension? Mass production can lower costs but in order to mass produce something you need a demand that will consume what you produce. But if no one wants the item because of the aforementioned issues than you can't justify mass producing the item. This is like the classic which came first Chicken or Egg problem, one doesn't happen without the other. Cost reduction doesn't happen without consumer demand. This is where tax incentives, subsidies, low cost loans and energy buyback contracts come into play in order to spur on demand and jump start mass production. You could also make electricity extremely expensive by taxing oil and carbon so that a Solar Cell becomes economically competitive to very expensive electricity. Problem with this option is the negative impact high energy costs have on economic activity. Just look at what happened a couple of summers ago when gas hit $4/gal. To spur on demand we need to incentives the use of Solar cells (and other alternative energy). This can be done through several means such as subsidies, tax incentives, low interest loans, energy buyback contracts etc...
- Q: How do solar panels affect the property's branding and marketing?
- Solar panels can positively impact a property's branding and marketing by showcasing its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It can position the property as a forward-thinking and eco-friendly option, appealing to environmentally conscious consumers and potentially attracting a larger customer base. Additionally, solar panels can contribute to cost savings and energy efficiency, which can be highlighted as unique selling points, enhancing the property's marketability and competitiveness.
- Q: How do solar panels perform in areas with high pollution levels?
- Solar panels are affected by high pollution levels as the presence of pollutants in the air can reduce their overall performance. The efficiency of solar panels decreases due to the reduced sunlight reaching the surface of the panels. Additionally, the accumulation of dust and particles on the surface of the panels can further hinder their performance by blocking sunlight. Regular cleaning and maintenance can help mitigate some of these effects, but high pollution levels can still have a negative impact on solar panel performance.
- Q: Can solar panels be installed in extreme temperatures?
- Yes, solar panels can be installed in extreme temperatures. However, extreme heat or cold can affect their efficiency and performance. It is important to consider the temperature range and potential impacts on the solar panels when planning and installing them in extreme climate conditions.
- Q: hi everyone..i wanna do my major project on solar panels...so anyone kindly tell me the projects based on solar panels..
- I have done this in my project too and a solar panel, two wires, a circuit/project board, an LED light/a small fan,a switch and a solderer. Just solder the wires to the positive and negative parts of the panel, put the wires connected to the panel to the board put the LED's on the other side and the switch together with it shine light on the panel and the light/fan will work.(If it dosen't work, please DO NOT consult ME.)
