- Q: I'm thinking of having solar panels to generate electricity. The drawbacks are that I'm afraid if it needs repair, I won't be able to find anyone. Also I'm afraid that the roof is not very accessible. If it is a new house, should the roof have a roof hatch? What can make the system not work?
- Modern solar electric panels rarely fail. Because of this, if you would be installing them over a roof that only has a few years left on it, it would be better to redo the roof, first. In the unlikely event that a panel needs to be changed, this can be done in 30 minutes or so, because the panels are mounted on racks, with everything simply plugging together. I have never personally seen a solar installation go bad, but from what I hear, the inverter (a box that goes in next to your electric service panel) is usually what burns out after 5 years, assuming the install was done right in the first place. If you were to call roofers to repair your roof, they would somehow be able to get to your roof, by ladders, or a special truck. Solar installers use the same kind of equipment. They won't have a problem getting up there. A solar electric system is actually a very straightforward thing. No matter who installs it, if there is a problem, another installer should be able to diagnose and fix it.
- Q: How do solar panels affect the appearance of a home or building?
- Solar panels can have a positive impact on the appearance of a home or building. While they do add an additional element to the exterior, the sleek and modern design of most solar panels can enhance the aesthetic appeal. Additionally, the presence of solar panels conveys a sense of environmental responsibility, making the property more attractive to eco-conscious individuals.
- Q: i dont wanna buy a solar panel becuase its too exspensive, i dont want use technical stuff i want to use every day materiels, but i need to know asap plzzzz.
- Solar panel is a sheet of highly expensive, purest Silicon manufactured in a factory of exceptional killingly stringent specifications. You can't do that as a cottage industry, at least the material.
- Q: My electric bill per month averages 800 kWh per month. I am looking at 65W solar panels. How many panels would I need to make my bill come to zero? I realize I also need an inverter to convert dc to ac.
- There are 720 hours in a month (30 days) but only about /2 of those are in *full* sun 800 kW hr / 360 hr = 5 kW. 5000 W / 65 W / panel = 30 panels minimum and that's based on full sun during the day (no clouds, rain, etc). Besides an inverter you'll also want a bank of batteries to operate at night. OR, you can get about 35 - 40 panels and sell power back to the utility during the day (meter runs backwards), and use power off the grid at night. Suprise! solar power isn't cheap, is it? Figure on taking advantage of some government and public utility rebates, though to lessen the cost. .
- Q: Can solar panels be used to power a mining operation?
- Yes, solar panels can be used to power a mining operation. Solar energy can be harnessed and converted into electricity to meet the power needs of a mining operation. By installing a solar panel system, mining companies can reduce their reliance on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and minimize their carbon footprint. However, the feasibility of using solar panels for mining operations would depend on various factors such as the energy requirements of the mine, available sunlight, and the size of the solar panel system needed to generate sufficient power.
- Q: Photo-Voltaic solar panels are very expensive. Most of a home's energy needs are for heating water, heating and air-conditioning. All of these can be met with thermal solar collectors which are much less expensive. The thermal solar panels would heat water stored in a hot water tank which then can be used as hot water, to heat the home, or as the heat source to a Lithium Bromide Absorption chiller to air-condition a home. With the base line needs met without expensive panels and without inefficient energy conversions, only a small Photo-Voltaic array would be needed for the remaining power needs and since those needs are variable, there would still be power to sell to the grid.
- Just read some of the other posts and I am surprised at the answers. Solar thermal systems typically have a payback of less than seven years on residential system without the tax break. A complete system can be installed for about 5k or less. Compare that to 20k or more for PV with a fifteen to twenty year pay off. Each home and area is different so a site evaluation must be done for exact figures and pay offs. I am going off my own experience in my above statements Flat panel collectors work well in most areas for DHW. Evacuated tubes often run too hot which works well for some applications or high usage. Heating water is the single greatest energy usage other than space heating and cooling. It often surpasses the two above systems based on its widespread usage(every houshold in USA has one) and its the amount it is used(24/7@365) The amount of energy spent to heat water is by order of magnitude the greatest number out there. Having a solar thermal system providing hot water for a average American household is equivalent to taking 40,000 miles off the freeway in a car every year. The BTU's required to heat the water is huge. So why is this more developed cheaper and more efficient technology behind PV in awareness? Natural Gas the number one choice for heating water is cheap. It's by product is invisible and misunderstood. What I find fascinating is if you look at the increase in Natural Gas vs Electricity you will be surprised by how much it has jumped in the last seven years. It is not talked about nearly as much as electricity It does not get the same level of press that PV does. So in short the answer is cheap Natural Gas prices and public perception of this product have kept it off the list of many that are turning toward the green trend. It is less sexy than watching your meter spin backwards. It is the best improvement at the best cost except for conservation which is and was the most cost effective energy saving that can be employed
- Q: Can solar panels be used in remote areas without access to the grid?
- Yes, solar panels can be used in remote areas without access to the grid. Solar panels generate electricity by harnessing sunlight, and they can operate independently of the grid. This makes them an ideal solution for remote areas where setting up power lines and accessing the grid may be difficult or costly. Solar panels can provide a reliable and sustainable source of electricity in such areas, allowing for various applications like powering homes, schools, clinics, and even small businesses.
- Q: want to run 400 watt heater 8 hrs a day how many solar panels do i need and batteries
- You could do that, but it would be an expensive way to go. If what you really want is heat, consider heating water directly with conventional solar water heaters, and storing it in a large, insulated tank. You can then circulate the water through a conventional radiator at night.
- Q: Can solar panels be used to power a space station?
- Yes, solar panels can be used to power a space station. Solar panels convert sunlight directly into electricity, and in space, where there is no atmosphere to scatter or absorb sunlight, they can generate a significant amount of power. Several space stations, including the International Space Station (ISS), rely on solar panels to generate electricity for various systems and experiments.
- Q: I'm very interested in how solar panels work. I understand the bigger picture of how it can be used for solar heating or as a generator, but I'm lost at the smaller details. Things like: - Could my computer work on solar? It has a 900 watt power supply (this is excluding monitor/speakers) - if a panel is for example, a 60 watt panel, does this mean it will pump 60 watts a second into a battery? - Does solar heating make the water electrified?
- Solar water heating is low technology. There are do it your self plans for it all over the internet. There is no electricity involved. Simply laying a garden hose on the ground in the hot Sun can heat the water to really high temperatures. Just have a shutoff nozzle on the hose, turn on the tap and open the nozzle until water comes out and then close the nozzle at the end of the hose. Let the hose full of water sit in the sun for an hour or so and then open the nozzle and feel how hot the water is that comes out. Be careful, because it can be so hot you can get a burn! When the gallon or so that can fit in the hose has all come out and is replaced by other water from the tap, it will feel cold again. Close the nozzle and wait another hour to heat it up again. A solar hot water heater is just a very long coil of pipe in the Sun, maybe with a pump to slowly circulate water from a holding tank so you can make and store more hot water that fits in the hose. Solar electric power is completely different. It uses semiconductor devices called solar cells to make electricity directly from light. Many of solar cells are usually arranged into large panels to make larger amounts of power. In electricity, Watts = Volts * Amps. Battery capacity is usually measured in Amp-hours. Small solar panels are often designed to produce electricity at 2 volts. A 60 Watt, 2 volt panel makes 5 Amps of electric current, because 2*5=60. So if you use it to charge a 2 volt battery with a capacity of 5 Amp-hours it will take hour to charge. A 0 Amp-hour battery would take 2 hours to charge with the same panel.
