Warning not all modern made .50 cal Hawkins can handle over a 100 gr charge of BP because some cheap clones don’t have quality barrels. In fact some that where made in Spain and other countries, didn’t even have pressure tested barrels and blew up on people.

Q: I have a muzzle-loader which I loaded new out of the box 2 months ago. I poured in the powder, and then shoved the bullet in. Since then, it has been stored in a garage, and exposed to warm, humid temperatures (about 75-80?) as well as about 20-30?f. I have not primed it yet - but was wondering if its safe to fire after priming. If not, how can I make sure it will fire properly. Is there a way to 'empty' it safely? I would rather not 'fire' out the bad shot, as I am afraid it could blow up in my hand or something. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly apprecaited!!: You can shoot the bullet safely. The worst thing that will happen is that it wont go off and will have to be pulled with a bullet puller, or if it is a more modern muzzleloader, just unscrew the nut on the end of the barrel and push it out the back end using the ramrod. As for the guy that commented on the weather, in my state this month, the weather was 21 degrees one day and 2 days later it hit 85. This was in a 2 day period, much less a 2 month period.

MODERN BP guns are just as accurate as any other modern firearm of the same class. I shoot 2 groups at 50 yards with my .44 Remington BP revolver, my .45 LC Ubertti revolver, OR my step daughter's 9 mm Taurus semi-auto. In order of retained foot pounds of impact energy at 50 yards, from high to low, they are .45 LC, .44 Remington, and 9 mm; the SAME order as at the muzzle when they are fired! Note that the conical bullet for the .44 Remington is actually MORE aerodynamic than that in the .45 LC, and almost identical to the 9 mm. Now in rifles, the main difference is that the BP weapons, because they use heavier bullets and are a larger caliber than MOST modern firearms DO require a different method of shooting at longer ranges due to the much greater drop of the bullet because they have lower muzzle velocity; but at 100 yards or less there is NO appreciable difference.
